HELP!!!Engine flooded

I had one posted before i thought i was the engine but i sent it to mazda dealer they told me its flooded and the trigger was starter.
And they told me i need a new starter and they charge to change engine oil as well i told them i just changed 2 months ago, they said sth got into it.

And now they are charging me a total of $1140

Is that reasonable price?

No. They are up-charging you like crazy.

A new starter is about $360? A reman is in the $200 range. I can replace mine in less than 20 minutes, starting from 4 wheels on the ground and no tools out. It's 1 electrical connector, 1 power bolt, and 2 mounting bolts, all easily reached under the car next to the transmission.

Oil is $20, filter is $5-$10. They are gouging you on something. Possibly the deflood itself.

=( But i dont know anywhere that knows how to fix the car in my area
I live in Mississauga, and the car is already at the dealer =(

they gave me a break down of the charges:

6 x spark plugs $269.68
2hrs of labour $99 x 2 = $198
oil change $50
new starter $404
1 hr of labour #99
plus tax

=(

Delete one of your two posts please.

- 6 spark plugs = they are stealing from you. There are only 4 in the car. You can get them for $20 each. I understand markups, but that is a markup of 125%
- Labor rate is acceptable, but if that is just 2 hours for the plugs they are retarded and shouldn't be touching the car.
- Oil change is on the REALLY high end of acceptable. Usually a $50 oil change is synthetic (Which you won't catch a dealer doing due to the stigma), plus the labor to do all of the change. If they are charging you labor in line 2, they shouldn't be re-charging you again.
- Starter price isn't marked up all that much, surprisingly.
- And they are charging you 3 hours of labor in 2 different lines?

None of this is stuff that is specific to the rotary. Any local mechanic could do this stuff.

If you told them "NO" to anything they asked you, and they still did it anyway, legally they can not charge you for it.

If they haven't touched anything, then you should get your car back unless you feel fine with paying that much. You are posting here about it, so I'm guessing you don't.

I guess the critical thing for you to decide is:
A) How fast do you need your 8 up and running? (I.e., can you wait a few days for Mazmart to ship you a new or reman starter)
B) How much can you afford to spend to get it going again? You can deflood the 8 and get it running again by yourself for free, without replacing any parts, though if it is actually the starter, then it's basically just waiting to flood at any time. You could even deflood it in the parking lot of the dealer and drive it away Plugs often need to be changed after a flood, but not always, or even most of the time. If you aren't due for an oil change, there is no reason to change it early because of a flood, flooding won't impact it. However, plugs/coils/wires are often the culprit of a flood, so if the dealer is wrong about it being your starter, then it's your ignition (usually)

I gather you don't have any tools or jack stands to do the work yourself? It's all REALLY easy.

No, I typically jump in to help before realizing that the person posting is female

Still, learning is a good thing right? Gotta start somewhere and get the confidence. Got any friends or relatives that are comfortable around cars that you can bring with you? They are probably up-charging you just because they think they can get away with it, so don't let them.

Where are you? Not sure where "Mississauga" is. Ontario Canada? We have a whole Canadian subforum, and looking at the population level, you should have some local members that could help you out.

Mississauga is pretty close to toronto, actually right beside toronto.

seriously we need some Canadian input on the prices. I have no idea what "normal" prices are in Canook money.

first off,, RWWIP, I notice that the OP lives North of the 49. That means prices for all parts and labor have just increased by about 15-20%...

lacedoll, you should try contacting some locals. I think wcs is fairly close to you.

The work you're asking to have performed on your car is actually REALLY easy/basic. If you have a full day to yourself, I'd recommend doing this on your own. Not only to save you money, but to give you a chance to get to "know" your car. Or, if you know someone who won't mind getting dirty, beer is a common form of currency

If not, then your only choice is probably the dealership...

Good luck!

EDIT: I was distracted by learning the Thriller dance, and as a result, my post was late...

@ Zoom. Hardly. I've done that more than once. I don't have avatars on, and don't really look at the username.

@lacedoll:
Yeah, Canadian prices could be different too, making it closer to reasonable (or farther, depending).

Also, take a look in these threads for possibly some close knowledgable people local to you:
