Help on loss of power (LOTS OF LOSS)

I have a RX-8, 2004, 231bhp, 6speed.........

ok when i set off it is like i have lost some power but when it hits between 4500 and 5000 rpm the engine noise changes (bit louber) and it gets a bit more power but still not the full wack...... i took the spark plugs out today and looked at then (full service less than 5000 miles ago) and they had brown powder on them, 2 coil packs have been changed and even if i swap them all round it is still the same.

anyone any clues???????

(oh and today i took off my trailing plug coil and it still funs the same)

i will love you forever if you know what is wrong with my baby and you will stop me from paying thr £67.50+vat to mazda for 1 hour of looking. x x x

Condition of the plugs is normal.

Only thing I can think of is the catilytic converter.

You are getting more power.

Oh, try this. Re-set the ECU. that probably is your problem.

Micky: might be a bad cat or it could be a bit of carbon build up.
You mentioned you only replaced 2 of the coils? Any reason you didn't replace all 4? If the other 2 are bad, that could be the problem.

Are you sure the spark plug wires are attached properly? They do have a tendency to come loose over time.

only replaced 2 coils as it was mazda that did it but not 12month is up i have to pay for them. Plug wire's are on right and have checked and checked them.

The cat does sound like it has more noise coming from it if i lay on the floor and push the gas with my hand tho.

there's a brake stomp method or you can disconnect the battery. I believe the insructions are in the Tech Section. Search: Reset ecu

i would pull the cat and look inside. it is pretty easy, and if it is bad it is obvious.

good luck.

You will know It will either be in pieces...or all plugged up, or both.

Often the first section before the O2 sensor looks OK..but if you shake the pipe pieces will come out the other end. If you have access to a fiberscope that's an easy way to look up the back end
