Help! My car won´t start (Flooded, thread from 2006)
Hi. I´m Niklas from Sweden. I have trouble whit my car and thought you guys might be able to help me.
Now to my problem.
A couple of days ago I parkt my car whith about half of the reserv left in the tank. Later that night I started the car to repark it, no problem at all. But the next morning the car refused to start.
The engine is turning but there is no egnition.
So I filled the tank whit 10 liters of gas (think thats about 4 gallons), same problem.
That light thats looks like a engine is on when I turn the key on. Thats not right, is it?
It´s still cold here at night so I thought it might be condensation in the tank and therefor the engine only sucks up water... don´t now.
Do any of you recon this problem, or have any ideas please let me now.
Thanks in advance.
/Niklas

Anytime you start the car, you have to run it for a while. When you start any car (piston or rotary), it goes through an enrichment process where it runs more gas than necessary. There are reasons this is done, but thats another discussion. A piston vehicle shoots the extra gas out with the exhaust. A rotary vehicle, because of the port location and the weight of the hydrocarbon chains in gasoline, recycles the gas. This is generally good for emissions. The only problem is, if you turn the car off during enrichment/cold start, you leave gas in the engine. When you restart it, you add more gas. You now have too much gas in the engine and it won't ignite properly. This is flooded. I'm sure the how-to on fixing this is fairly self explanatory if you are decent with a wrench.
Historically, I think the 2 rule of thumbs for running a rotary are:
1) No short starts. If you turn the engine on, run it for a bit.
2) Don't turn it off from idle. I generally run the car up to 3k for a couple seconds, release the gas and kill it as it drops down. The extra cycles will pump some of the gas out.
Having only briefly owned my 8, I'm not sure how strongly these must be followed but obviously, you can flood the engine if you ignore it.

There's a lot of unnecessary confusion about flooding the engine—particularly for people who are new. I can understand why—when I was buying the car I wasted hours reading thread after thread about flooding, not to mention all the info in the owners's manual and on the new owner's DVD.
But it's so simple! You just have to remember one little rule:
NEVER TURN OFF THE ENGINE UNTIL IT'S WARM!
That's all anyone needs to know. If Mazda explained it that simply, I bet there'd be far less flooding.

Definitely flooded. In the owners manual, there is a 'deflooding procedure'. You should try that or have it towed to the nearnest dealership.
If you've got an '04, they'll most likely upgrade the starter, plugs, and battery. Good luck.

stop flooding ur engines
sorry to ruin a thread, but come on. how many topics are there about flooding? like a billion. and even tho about 1% of the american public read the owners manual, a car this quirky should be a requirement to read it.

FREE ADVICE!
Yes Niklas, New Yorker was right about the simpliest thing to remember is to never shut off an engine unless it's warmed up a bit. There ARE NO short "start-move-shut downs" with the RX-8. That's what causes the flooding.

Come on people, if you don't know that you have a flooded car then you don't know that you need to search for flooding threads. Besides, we don't know if the dealers or the owners manuals in Sweden point out the issue or even if the warranty there will cover.

Thanks for the help guys. I pushed the car down a hill and it started right away. Many thanks.
I know, this got to be the latest reply in forum history. Haha. I just feel bad that I did´nt get back here to check on my thred.
Only reason i came back to this forum was to cancel my membership here. I sold my RX8 many years ago. But I still think about it some times. I really loved that car. Anyways, thanks again.
Good bye! And all the luck to all RX8 owner out there.

Wow i searched flooding and got this thread,Alot of hate in here ppls!
I too "Think" i have flooded the car
tried the standard remove fuel pump fuse, turn it over for a while replace fuse,do again blablabla..
I was driving happily home when she misfired a few times from 3-5k rpm, looked online. As i'm in the uk it came up with rx8ownersclub.What a bunch of arseholes they are! Were only willing to help if i signed up for membership @ £32 ($52 to you guys across the pond),Which i think is a bit steep just to get some friendly advice.I've been trolling your forums looking for answers and used your guides to check coils,ESS,Plugs etc..
So today...New genuine mazda coils,New NGK IR Plugs,New Magnecore leads and a N3Z1 starter.None of which are cheap! Still no joy, took the plugs out and they are soaked with gasoline. For tonight i have left the plugs out to try and dry out the chambers.Any advice on tomorrow what to do? I thought about towing it but unless i am blind Mazda thought not to put any towing eyes on the car AT ALL!
Extra info...
99 octane fuel
2004 231PS with 41k on the clock
new leads,plugs,coils,Fresh oil
Me and my mechanic friend got her started on the old coils when she died and she was missing and spitting out smoke like a rasta in marleys plantation then stalled (before warmed up) which tells me she is flooded.
Sorry for the hijack but didnt wanna start a new pointless thread

I dont really think its a big deal to "Move your car a short distance and shut it off cold".
I dont think you should abuse the rx8 motor at all. Always let it warm up before putting the pedal down hard; but thats any car.
If you have flooding issues, I'd say theres an underlying cause. I have flooded it before because of bad ignition parts. But I have a 2005 with a reman motor with failing compression numbers, and cold, its still starts up like a champ (even after I just move it into my garage or something). And I have to constantly move my car in and out of my garage to work on it/wash it.
A lot of people have all these different theories about "reving the RPMs for a few seconds", or "letting it idle for 5 min before shutting off". You're just wasting gas (and at $4.15 a gallon for premium, you better rethink that) . If you are having a flooding issue, your car has some other problems you should check out.

Well 2 of my coils had failed which i presume was enough to cause the flooding,That cheap for premium! equivalent to $6.75 a gallon over here :-( i would tow but cant see a tow point. I live on a big hill so can roll it down but what if it still doesnt fire? Ill be stuck at the bottom of the hill with no way to tow!

It's possible that you could get the car to a rolling start downhill only if two of the coils busted are a leading and a trailing. Before you do this; recheck your connections(battery or plugs), cold weather can be a factor also if the battery is weak(a Cold Cranking Amp of equal or more than 640 is needed). Nevertheless, a compression check is a must.
