Does it return to normal after a couple minutes (if that)?
Its common seeing that when the outside temps are low (like in the winter).
Also, did you just disconnect the battery for any reason?

It's normal.

You want to see a high idle then park it outside overnight in 5 degree weather. When I went out the next day to start it, it cranked over like a champ and went all the way up to nearly 3,000RPM for a moment or two before it started to come down.

I have read where there is an override / defeat of the cold high-idle on the RX-7, and wonder if this is true and if it works on the RX-8 also. IIRC, it involves starting the motor with the clutch pedal pushed in and the transmission in gear.

The car won't start if you don't push the clutch in anyway, no power goes to the starter, it's a safety thing... and I always have my car in gear and release it after the engine turns over. So this won't matter, I still get the high rpms when I first start the engine when cold.

It is normal, but not normal if it stays at that high rpm...

it shoots up to higher rpm so the oil pressure would come up quicker so you dont damage the engine
