intake needs replaced due to carbon deposits $3200.00

It seems that high RPM at the track...with the oil level full caused it to blow back into the intake.
Don't see how the type of oil will change that.........

Sorry Nemesis8, not looking to **** you off.
I am all for preventing bad **** from happening to my 8. Whether its Mazda's problem or not.
Any photo's of the 2006 PCV system yet?

Only my opinion here, but I suspect those who find this type of oil accumulation will be the same ones who will have the carbon build-up issue in their Intake Manifold.
When I changed over to the REVi Intake last fall, there was no indication of any oil residue in the accordian section, or on the air filter for that matter.
As a precaution I will be installing a Catch Can, and rechecking my intake path once again for any signs of oil that don't belong there.

When I was washing my car today, I took out the air filter just to look at it, and there was a ton of oil in it. When I replaced the last filter, there was none. I also had the APV motor replaced last summer because of carbon buildup, and I'm actually taking the car in this week for another CEL. My guess is the APV motor again. I'm noticing lately the car bogs down once in awhile and seems like it is straining to rev a little. I'm still under warranty though...44,000 miles. I have an '04 also.

Second Intake - Carbon Deposits
I'm currently battling Mazda to replace my SECOND intake manafold since it was bought new in '04. I had my original replaced at 50K and it went bad again at 67K. Mazda did offer to cover all but $1000 but I just don't feel I should be paying anything for this. From what i'm reading in this thread there isn't much we can do to combat this problem. It seems like this is a somewhat common problem that Mazda has not addressed. I have also had to replace the coils in the car twice, once at 30K and then 60K. This car is great to drive and so much fun but it's becoming way to expensive with all its headaches. My dealership has been great assisting me with everything but this is just getting out of hand. It may be time to say goodbye. Any thoughts as to why the coils and manafolds are going bad in my 8? I drive 100 miles a day on a long commute, highway speeds. There is no possible way carbon build up screwed up a new intake over 17K miles.

I had oil in the intake once, that was long *** time ago cuz I think it was overfilled.
Now after 30k+ miles, no problem. No oil, well yes Im using K&N Version 2 for quite some time now, but seriously it has nothing to do with it, right ?

I have only had a little bit of oil in the accordian tube once and it was after a long track day......never anything since.........I have an 04 GT with 70000km ( roughly 44k miles ) and I have to say that besides the grinding gears I have had a good experiance. Mind you, I use the suggested additives that mazda suggests when I have it serviced...ie. they put in a carbon cleaning, injector cleaning additive at my last oil change and I have noticed an increase in performance, lots of carbon came out the exhaust on the first few starts after they put it in........but been great since.....its hit and miss with this car......all there is too it unfortunately.......really have to consider keeping this car after warranty is up......might be cheaper to get a new one with warranty??

Sucks you cant remove whole intake without removing motor . Then you could take it apart and clean everything. Take to a machine shop and it would look brand new.
If you are stuck with a big bill can you remove the bad valve and clean it yourself?

So do we think the 'new' pcv system or a catch can will combat this, cause if it does, I'm going to put one on.
And FYI just cause Mazda puts out a TSB on somthing doesn't mean it's gonna be covered by them. Probably if your under warranty they will; but they told me I'm fuct pretty much.

i dont see where you guys are seeing you have to pull the motor the get to the intake manifold... ive pulled 3 just fine without moving the motor at all... it requires some nimble fingers and tools, also possible a/c disconnect but i see recharging your a/c at 100 bucks a lot cheaper than paying a motor drop charge...
i wish i had some 6port intake manifolds laying around but all i got is a 4 port... sorry

I've got about 80,000 miles on my ride and it's in the shop for carbon deposits in my intake manifold, for the second time, and the guy says it needs to be replaced for the same quoted price of $3200. This time they also had to replace 2 coils that weren't working and their corresponding spark plugs. Now, I know I don't know a lot about cars but all I want to know is a good alternative. Like what other options do I have other than dealing with a Mazda dealership's so-called mechanic? Or what kind of aftermarket parts could I use instead of the dealerships parts? I know I should read more threads, and I will, but I just don't know what to look for. The big picture is that yes, I would love to upgrade my ride and get better performance out of it, I just don't know where to start. And this intake problem isn't helping me at all.

Well, you can save ALOT of money if you can do it yourself.
Second, sometimes, Im saying *sometimes*, What they said (Mazda tech) is NOT always true. and its probably something else.
I still dont understand how does the intake manifold got stuck by Carbon deposit. and seriously speaking, even it is for whatever reason, how would those Tech even know that it exist ? Oh let me guess, either they take a good damn guess, or called the moron Mazda Tech Line, or simply just following service manual's guideline then suggest you the most expensive fix(which they can make most money outa ya)
What kind of engine oil you use anyway ?

Well, I'm thinking of buying a 04 6-spd 8. I've been scouring the forum looking for downfalls and it seems this is the big one. Can you just change this valve? It seems that would be a lot better than paying 3 grand for a whole new mani... This will be my first rotary and I am already getting scared, lol.

many people on this forum gone over 70-80K without this problem. Some gone thru 100K, no intake problem.
I have only 37K so I cant say much but, my car still pulling strong everyday. Will see about that in 1 year (I will have 50K by then)
