Intermittent P2096 CEL Need Advice on High Mileage RX8
I have been getting intermittent P2096 CEL, under a variety of different conditions. Light has came on when redlining in 2nd, cruising on local street, and climbing grade with AC on. It does not always come on in those situations, but occasionally it would. Frequency is about once every other month or so, since the start of 2013.
The 2004 6sp car has 115k miles, still on original engine. Here is the compression # done in early 2012, before the CEL episode being full blown.
Rear O2 changed at 86k, coil pack/wire/plug done at 94k, and MAF cleaned at 109k. I also did HSI coil/wire spark test and no issues on ignition. So I'm ruling out compression & ignition & air & fuel (does autox regularly with hard corning & no ill affect). The car seems fine even when P2096 does come on, though fuel mileage has definitely taken a hit. Routinely gets 250 with mixed driving, and now it's just slightly over 200 before the low fuel light.
Here is the fault freeze frame log with most recent episode of P2096:
------------------
Engine Load = 77.647 %Engine Coolant Temperature = 213.8 °FFuel Trim Bank 1 Short Term = -17.188 %Fuel Trim Bank 1 Long Term = 4.688 %Engine RPM = 3,532 rpmSpeed (OBD) = 72.079 mphTiming Advance = 19.5 °Intake Air Temperature = 89.6 °FMass Air Flow Rate = 513.209 cfmThrottle Position(Manifold) = 40.784 %Fuel Level (From Engine ECU) = 31.765 %Barometric pressure = 14.504 psiCatalyst Temperature (Bank 1,Sensor 1) = 1,714.64 °FVoltage (Control Module) = 13.887 VEngine Load(Absolute) = 65.882 %Commanded Equivalence Ratio = 0.961 Relative Throttle Position = 29.412 %Ambient air temp = 89.6 °FAbsolute Throttle Position B = 52.157 %Accelerator PedalPosition D = 48.627 %Accelerator PedalPosition E = 38.039 %
Attached are also photos of the honeycomb on original cat (cracks found) and the front O2 sensor. Please let me know the followings:
1) Should I be looking at swapping in another newer OEM cat? I'm in CA.
2) Clean rear O2 with compressed air & check o2 sensor voltage resistance is probably not a bad idea, but it's only 20k since last replaced.
3) Anything else I missed and haven't checked?
4) I did experience a severe episode of car stalling at idle, after a long drive & shut-down. The stall happened anytime my foot was off the gas under low speed (waiting at intersection/traffic light/etc), so the only remedy was to pop in the clutch to keep engine from stalling at idle. It hasn't happened for a long time, after KAM reset. This was in late 2012, so after the compression test, and before intermittent P2096. Should I do WOT pull in 2nd gear from 30mph and record times elapsed to realize the health of the engine?
Thanks for insights & consideration in reading this lengthy post!

Damnit, i have the same code , tried everything except the fuel pump though my rear rotor is losing compression. I probably will get a reman motor in and change the fuel pump.
