welcome. first off you posted in the wrong section, second all of your questions have been answered many times. search button at the top of the page is your friend. 8s run rich and get crap for gas mileage. haeter is most likely a bad solder joint. READ THE STICKIES

If you can see smoke, make sure your spark plugs, wires, and ignition coils are good as well as you catalytic converter.

I would like to know why you posted this question about your 2004 car in this section of the forum where your post should have gone in the forum above this one?

Why did you post here?
You were so close to getting one thing right on your first post.
But you failed.

BC.

You fail. This auto would destroy 95% of the 6 speeds on this site.

More like stock auto 4 port. The 6 port/6 speed auto is pretty comparable actually with bolt ons and a Cobb tune.

That's a pretty sick 8...I can't stop looking...This makes me really want to file a claim with my insurance to fix the imperfections on mine...Any other person wouldn't really be able to tell, but I can obviously.

You didn't get that many insults...I've seen much worse...Just a heads up, don't ask basic questions...As in, things you should have already known prior to purchasing your 8...Yes, the search button sucks, but that doesn't prevent you from being able to find what you need to know...It's all here.

poor(er) gas mileage can be blamed on a lot of things. When was the last time the plugs/coils were changed? Air filter? Check your cat converter.

Better fuel mileage for the 2006+ models maybe, but an 04-05 automatic will be a 4 speed auto and should be getting horrendous mileage.

I don't know about better fuel mileage,
I know a few Rx-8's with auto's and they can hardly reach 17 mpg.
Well 4ports at least, not sure about 6ports.
I have almost 81,000 miles on the clock and I've never had a problem with grinding gears.

Also, you guys are comparing a modded auto to a stock 6speed...

How about a modded 6speed vs a modded auto?

It's still a lot slower, and IMO takes away from the driving experience.

I'm not hating on the automatic, but this comparison is like trying to compare rotaries to pistons... it just doesn't make sense to.

EDIT: That 8 looks really sexy though.

6-speed manual: 20 mph / 1000 rpm in top gear
4-speed auto: 25 mph / 1000 rpm in top gear

Even the 04-05 automatics should do better in highway cruising.

Being aware of the normal fuel consumption is an important aspect of maintenance. If fuel consumption noticeably increases under your usual driving conditions, it can be indicative of problems with spark plugs, coils, catalyst, MAF sensor, etc., and ignoring such issues can lead to more serious problems with the motor.

The posting I referenced was a comparison of manual and automatic transmission characteristics for potential buyers. It was not meant to suggest any unrealistic fuel consumption efforts for current owners.
