Lol, New member of the RX-8 club, and the failed Power steering club!
Well, Finally Got my snow tires on and it was like night and day. Then today i turn my car on, and the Power steering has gone. Yes, I've read all the threads about similar problems with other people's RX-8's. Just wanted to let you know, I have 239 KM on the Odom. That didnt take long! Off to the dealer.

Just curious:
did it completely fail and stay failed?
did the power steering light turn on in the dashboard?
did the car stall or otherwise glitch when this happened?
have you had any other electrical problems?
Seems like my car glitched the power steering once in it's 18-month life with me. Stalled or something, I think it was some goofy thing I'd done. Anyway, I was maneuvering slowly in a parking lot and felt the electric motor 'quit helping' and was amused by it. One quick restart and everything was fine.
Did you take it to the dealer yet? Did you summon Mazda RoadSide assistance for a free tow?
Be sure to follow-up with us - I'd be curious to know what the dealership says.

The Power steering did completely fail. Once it went, it went, It didnt come back after a restart. Also, it was complete, not like Those cases I've read about where they get some power when turning left or after the engine warms up. There was no other stalling or glitching that I can think of. Ill be taking it to the dealer on Saturday and I'll definitely update you. The only other thing of note was that when I first brought it home, the engine light came on, but called the dealer and he said its probably nothing, it would run self diagnostics and probably turn off after a couple of runs and it did.
Ill definitely keep you posted on it though.

Well, I got up to go to the dealer today, and of course the power steering was fine! So I drove there anyway, and he told me that when the temp drops below -20 C, the power steering will shut off to protect itself. IT makes sense i guess, the last few days were ridiculously cold. Anyway, drove all day today and no problems. Ill keep you guys updated if it goes out again.

That's odd - I've started up my car when the ambient temp sensor read 0F or even -5F to -10F. Never had the power steering give me any trouble at those temps. Never heard of a self-protect mode for the power steering either. He might just be trying to make an excuse for doing nothing when they can't replicate the problem.
Seriously, that failed power steering club is really small and exclusive. Hopefully yours was just a glitch.

Mine just gve up today. I was changing to a new battery and after that the EPS warning light appeared on my dash. I've checked the 60A fuze and wiring and all seems fine. Any gurus here can give a pointer? Someone said to check the plug on the shroud of the Radiator on the right side of the battery. Which plug is this?

Left the car overnight. Went straight to start-up the car again this morning. Everything is fine now. I think the EPS Controller took awhile before it stabilised after I reconnected the battery. Thanks again.

Guys If you change the battery or disconnect the battery, you will get a EPS light to come on, The proper procedure is to start the car and turn the steering full lock to lock in both directions and then back to center. Shut the car of and restart it.
READ YOUR MANUAL ! Its a calibration procedure. Had it happen to me every time I disconnected the batrtery when trying different Intake systems. It reset fine using that procedure and have never had a glitch with it.
