Angry loss of power

i have a 2004 with 80000 miles...I was driving home yesterday and I noticed when im in 4th 5th and 6th gear around 4500rpm or so ,as I have my foot on the gas pedal ,the rpm goes down and slowly comes back up,but doesnt want to go above 5000 or so...ive even had it not want to go above 80mph at one point no matter how much i floored it...is this the symptoms of low compression? Its aggravating to see when im flooring it the rpm doesnt even move instead it just stays where there or skips down a little...Is it time for the compression test?

If your running an 04 and it still has its original motor then a compression test is certainly worthwhile just to know what the current compression numbers are. However, if the compression is failing there usually are other symptoms besides just loss of power - another common one is slow/no starting.

Other common issues often cited for loss of power are bad coils, plugs, & wires as well as a failed cat.

When's the last time you replaced the Coils and Spark Plugs? A tune-up may be needed. After Coils, Plugs, and wires, then I would look at a compression test. I'm in the Boston area and can help you do this stuff if your local.

hey thanks for the offer ...i did full tune up 3weeks ago.. I just found the problem...brought the car to 128 liberty mazda this morning ..They ran all test and nothing is wrong with it, so they test drove and was able to reproduce my problem...Turns out that its my clutch ,its totally worn down, I had a feelin it was the clutch cuz it felt like it was slippin...Know of any good shops to install a new one?

A bad clutch causes you car not to Rev past 5000 rpm? Do you feel it slipping during all of your shifts? Does it ever engage properly?

Yea it seems like when I'm in first second and third gear the car revs fine ..then when I'm in 4th 5th and 6th...as soon as 4500 comes around it slips down and then slowly comes back up but wil go above the 5000 rpm...it seems like it slips first and then comes back up...engagement isn't to bad, but u can definitly feel like its not grabbing...seems like it takes a second or 2 before it feels like it grabs...they looked at the clutch and said its definitely worn...My friends was has a mazda 6th ...he had the same symptoms and it ended up being the clutch 2...just rermembered he had the same problem...he replaced the clutch and everything is fine...

It may be coincidental that the clutch is worn and you are experiencing that problem. I always find it hard to believe a dealership. Can anyone confirm or relate to this? Has anyone else had a worn clutch and had this happen?

I'm not saying the clutch isnt the problem, just trying to make sure it is before you spend all kinds of money replacing it.

Yea I know what u mean...I find it hard to believe dealerships also..I know in first second and 3rd I can redline it then 4th 5th and 6th seems to slip off...I hope its just the clutch..id like a new motor before that 100k warranty is up and at the same time I donlt...such a PIA and I've seen people on the forum already on they're 3rd or 4th motor...the cars never had a problem starting or has never flooded either...
