Lost Power, Engine Light, Smoke, Now $3100 dealer estimate

I think you got a fair deal all said and done. The dealer was expensive on the labor to change the plugs & coils but in all honesty they weren't going to do all the labor for free. I'm surprised they absorbed as much as they did. Then again, over $600----Still a pretty expensive fix to have a cat fail. These are just the times I guess.

I can't believe the dealer charged what they did for labor on plugs and coils...it's a 30 min job at most. Hell, Corky from "Life Goes On" could have changed them out in under an hour!
You got f'd on that part, only good thing is you didn't spend anywhere near the 3k they wanted originally.

Can't believe they charged 3hrs labour. Just had by plugs repalced with Denso ones and the coils done too. Labour was less than an hr. And that is from a non-Mazda place - first RX8 they have worked on(they worked on my previous car and I'd like them to move to RX8s but hey in time).
The prices you were charged make the prices here in the UK sound better than before. Plugs were £120 (about $150).
Hope it keeps going well.

Labor Rates
The reason I didn't just tow it home and do it myself was that they were going to charge me another diagnostic/inspection fee when I brought it back to "verify" I put in the correct parts and that they were put in correctly..... It was their attempt at being vindictive about me not wanting to pay for them to put the plugs/coils in. So the labor breakdown would have went like this:
Initial Diagnostic Fee: $88 (which goes toward any work done)
2nd Fee if I would have taken the car home to do my own plugs/coils: $88
Cost for me to rent a Uhaul car hauler for one day: $60
Total: $236.00 (2 diagnostic charges and tow dolly)
So it would have cost me about $236 vs the $264 they ended up charging...only a $28.00 difference and they are doing the work.
Best I could do under the circumstances. Oh well, I can sleep at night.

They were going to get you one way or another. Remember, dealers are in business to make money. Warrantying cars doesn't make them money. We all want something for free and for companies to stand by their product or service but the realty is the warranty is only as good as the company's ability to make money long term. All said and done, I think you got a fair deal. Great, NO, but Bad? --Not bad.
