Loud knockin noise from UNDER the engine, now stalled and won't start!
Hey guys,
So!
Essentially, I've just had the first real problem with my rx8. Recently the car has lost abit of power, and feels abit sluggish after 6000 revs. It hasn't been a massive issue - I've just NOTICED it. I've bought new plugs, NGK leads and Mazda Coils, which I was going to fit once I got a day off!
Today, as I was driving there was suddenly a loud knocking noise from the engine bay, and a massive loss of power across the revs (I didn't go above 4000). I pulled over and the noise continued with idle - it seemed to be coming from UNDERBEATH the engine. (Or right at the bottom)
I drove home (3 minute drive) and as I pulled up the engine stalled, and won't start again.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be?
Any help would be much appreciated, ill be fitting my new coils/sparks/leads hopefully tomorrow.
Thanks,
Gordon

Did you ever notice if your cat was glowing since the sluggishness began?
I guess next steps: since you already have plugs/coils, fit them and see if it starts. Then bring it for a compression test. Knocking sound is generally not a good sign, unfortunately, consistent with an apex seal going for a walk around your engine, but could be a bunch of other things.
A video of the sound would help.
When you try to start it, does it not turn over or turn but not fire?

Hey guys,
Well I've finally changed the coils leads and plugs, and the engine now starts. I did notice there was a fair amount of oil on the floor under the car.
Here's a video of the sound it makes, sounds like a tractor! Probably rear bearing? Anyone know somewhere around London/Essex I can get a reasonably cheap rebuild?
Thanks. Video URL: http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l2...ED1F960A3B.mp4

I can't see the video but if it is knocking quite trying to start it and drive it, you are only likely doing more damage.
Have you checked the oil level? You need to get the engine properly diagnosed by someone who knows what they are doing.
