Master/Slave Cylinder - Clutch Pedal Assembly Question

Last week my 2004 would not go into gear while the engine was running. I was able to get it into gear, easily, when the engine was off.

I took it to a mechanic (not a mazda dealer) and they told me my Master/Slave cylinders needed to be replaced. They did that and bled the lines. I picked up the car and it drove fine.

Yesterday shifting started to become slightly difficult again. Driving home at the end of the day, I heard and felt a distinct *snap* on the clutch pedal and heard the sound of metal falling. Immediately, the car again would not go into gear while the engine was running, exactly as it had in the prior week.

I took the car back to the same mechanic. He told be that the clutch pedal assembly had broken. I have no doubt about that, as I am aware of that problem on the RX-8 and felt and heard it break. I am taking the car to a Mazda dealer where they will fix it at no charge.

The car has precisely the same symptoms both before and after the Master/Slave cylinders where replaced (although it did drive fine for a few days after the replacement). My question is this: is it possible that it was the clutch pedal assembly was the problem the entire time and that replacing the Master/Slave cylinders was unnecessary?

Many thanks,

sjc
