My Car dies while driving
Alright, ive searched and only found one thread on this and it wandered way off topic.
This happened to me 3 times yesterday and had never happened before. I was driving in town at city speeds, not to fast, and when i would put the car in nuetral and the car would die, it would always restart but it shouldnt die at all. I watched it die the 3rd time and when it did it the tach needle drop from 6k to 0 quick and the car died. I watched the needle the rest of the day while coasting to a stop and noticed everytime i hit N the needle would go damn near all the way to zero then resume idle speed.
Anyone had this happen to them or heard of a problem/solution..???
I was running 89 octane and it was a lot warmer yesterday then it had been the last few days... Is it possible that this was a freak thing caused by the different gas and warmer weather???? Im just throwing things out here trying to figure it out? Any guess'

it sounds like a confused PCM to me. there are 2 different fuel maps used during decleration. 1 for when it is decelerating in gear and one for when you are decelrating and down shifting( i may have something wrong there- i dont feel like i said it correctly). we also know that the car also cuts some of the fuel on decelration and when it gets to idle the firing order(leading/trailing) switches. it sounds like your car is confused about what you are doing. now i have done a 6th gear drop into neutral and coast down a hill several times- it's against the law, it's dangerous yadda yadda- and not had this occur. have you done any mods to your car that would involve electrical connections. done anything with the grounds? have you done this when the cruise control was on? how much fuel did you have?
someone in that other thread said
i know its old but i wanted to point out that the above statement is false and the car sure does know you are coasting- it know the throttle position, speed, rpms and gear selection- and changes which fuel map it is using and plug firing order. its also going from open loop to closed loop.

i was coasting to a stop light 2 out of the 3 times and going around a round a bout the 3rd time when it happened (i was just holding the clutch in that time).
I was at the dealership today and they plugged it up and captured a funny graph when the revs are coming down.. they had never seen this before. Anyway, he recorded it and is going to send it off somewhere to let them analyze it. in the meantime he updated it with a new flash they just released last week and we just get to sit tight and see what the car does or what the tech guys say.
It happened 3x yesterday afternoon but none last night or today

he might have meant update.. he was working on my borhters car and mine at the same time so i could have heard wrong.
Yea, im gonna run up there after work to look at my brothers car and ask him if he found out anything about mine. I told him to take his time with mine because im fine as long as the car runs.

The problem here is the PCM doesn't know you are in neutral..Have the dealer check the pid using the WDS and see if the "ingear" value changes as you move the shifter.
The car will go to a specific map in neutral and another when you are driving.
I've seen this one two different occaisions now.

yea, i called my dealer and they are going to look at it this week and take care of the problem. Apparently that wds box is a pretty wicked little box that tells you all sorts of cool diagnostic stuff

Funny my yellow 8 did the same thing for about 2 weeks. My problem was the vacuum lines going to my new K&N intake pipe were not a tight fit. I just replaced the hose with a thicker walled and tighter fitting one. No more problems.

Wait a minute, you're saying that you put the car into neutral while your driving at speeds over 40mph?
I dont understand why you wouldn't have the car in gear at all times except when you come to a complete stop. Not quite sure the driver should be driving in a car where it is not engaged in a gear at highway speeds. I hope that it isn't for some reason like trying to save on gas mileage or some other reason like that....
I am not knocking the fact that your car is stalling, just not sure if I am understanding you right.

when im slowing down to come to a stop the car does that in nuetral. I dont just get up to speed and coast, its just when im coming to a complete stop. Its an old pizza delivery habit i have from delivering pizza for 5 years.

I do the same thing most of the time if when I have lots of room. I figure its cheaper to replace the brakes then it is to replace the clutch. I downshift if I need to stop fast.
I know I know, rev match the downshifts... easier said then done. For some reason I can't get used to how fast the revs drop in this beast. Maybe its the drive by wire...

hmm i was testing my intake kit that im making for my car, i have 2 other cars with me, a AT and MT, both died just like you said, the problem was the intake, i had a regular cone style filter in the car, when we changed the intake filter to a cone with a funnel inside everything was okay..........
