navigation buttons issue

i have an '04 mt and the nav screen opens/closes fine, reads the map cd etc...but there seems to something wrong with the buttons between the seats. The first screen shot is of the "don't use while driving..." and it takes me a bunch of tries to get it to beep and go the the nav/map screen (by pressing down on the joystick) none of the other buttons give me any responses though so i can't get to the menu or look for an address....
i tried searching a little but most of the problems people have are with the tilt function.
if anyone has had this problem or knows wtf is wrong i'd appreciate it!

Well, idk what'd wrong. But my first suggestion would be to take off that piece of the console, and make sure the connection is good and nothing is popped out of place anywhere.

sort of.

there was a mazda meet at a dealer so i asked them to take a look at it...the guy said that since the streets change as i'm driving down the street, then the gps software must be working correctly and that it's an issue with the controller itself. I asked him if he had one in stock to see if we could plug-n-play with a working one to know for sure, but he didn't have one in stock (it's ~$500!!). he told me to check out car-part . com for a controller off another rx8 for much cheaper though.
still haven't gotten around to it though.
so i use a google print-out and follow it on my screen to make sure i haven't passed my desired street.
good luck

Do you have the owners manual? The back of the manual has the operating instructions for the Nav unit;that would be a good place to start.
