New coils

I just wanted to ask you guys opinion. I had my coils replaced under warranty on my 05 rx8 14 months ago due to no power problems. I have brought the car in three times since for normal maintenance and have complained about the same problem only to have the dealer service dept. tell me they can't duplicate my concern. I even brought in the tsb just to have them tell me that there is no problem with the engine. Recently in the last month or so my car has been stalling and still lacks power. I decide to call mazda and we agreed to take it to a different dealer. Now my car needs a new engine but they are making me pay for new coils as the car is now out of basic warranty(55,000 miles). The service mgr says that the reason the coils went is because the engine is creating excessive heat. Why wouldn't mazda cover the coils as they are obviously collateral damage from the faulty engine which they have conceded is faulty due to the extension of the warranty? Thanks in advance for any help.

And the warranty probably excludes collateral damage.

If the cost of coil replacement is the worst hand you've been dealt by a dealer or shop mis-dianosis, you're ahead of the game.

Normal powertrain warranty is 5yr/60k...so, why are they not covering the coils under the powertrain warranty and replacing the motor? Also under normal circumstances, the coils are only covered under the normal parts warranty, which is 12mo/12k. You're getting a new motor so, that's a good thing.

How many do you need? You can order 4 at places online and shipped overnight for less than $150.

Mazda customer service is telling me they are a maintenance item which makes no sense as they were replaced twice already under warrranty. I need all 4 coils. I just wanted to make sure this is normal procedure and that its not just me getting ripped for the parts and labor. They are doing the job for $400 plus tax.

But you're still under normal 5yr/60k power train warranty so, that doesn't make sense. I had my coils, plugs, and wires replaced 8 times while under the original power train warranty, no questions asked. If they are pressing the issue, just buy the coils from one of the vendors online and bring them coils. They shouldn't charge you labor to install them since they are gonna have to install them on the new motor anyways.

5/60 is the extended power train warranty, which lists specific parts. If it's not listed, it's not covered.

Regular bumper-to-bumper is 4 years/50k (3/36 for '07 and newer). I'd expect coils to be covered under that. Wear items are either excluded or covered for the first year...the warranty says just what.

^I understand that, my dealership saw my ignition issues as a covered part of the power train warranty. Apparently every dealership different.

To the OP, just buy your coils from an independent dealer and be done with it.

Coil is not covered under powertrain/engine warranty thats true, cuz its electrical.

U can get all 4 online for maybe 120 bux or something.

but noticed the line, thats just pure bullshit. this engine create heat yes, but these coils failed cuz Mazda gone cheap. nothing to do with heat itself.

My FC coils old as ****, can support 500 hp without problem.

Well then ask them why Mazda makes such an inadequate cooling system and why it's your fault.

Tell them to show you where in the maintenance schedule it say's anything about changing coils and when it suggests replacing ignition coils as routine maintenance.

Thanks for all the input. I'm going to try once more with mazda customer service and see if I can persuade them to cover the coils but I'm glad to know that in the future I can get these coils on the cheap and replace them myself. I have a feeling they will go out on me again.
