I missed all day Monday for a class and had to leave early for (tee time) a project yesterday so I have some reports to run..Beer thirdy will be about 5pm..

Don't forget that the figures provided by Rodsterin are incomplete without cranking rpms. There's nothing necessarilly wrong with these numbers.

Cranking rpm on the eight is slower ( around 210) which will show lower numbers on the old digital tester and the original starter. The new starter/battery combo will spin over faster and would most likely give similar numbers to an earlier 7.

I've not tested mine since it had 1200 miles on it and it was at mid 6'skg/cm3

As far as i know there only have been a few cars in Australia with engine problems

I'm sure most US dealers have not replaced an engine.

With the 640cca battery the cranking speed jumps 10%

255 iirc.

K,

I went in today and the warranty admin had taken all the claims to her office..I'll run another one this week. I did get to work on an old truck though..

I hope the gas tank was full of liquid petrol -- sure don't want to have any 'gas' near that welder.

I'm from the same neck of the woods, and I'm having my engine replaced for this EXACT issue right now. Frustrating.

I was told by the dealer that Mazda has a fix for it coming... its just too far down the road for mine.

Hello, my neighboring Okie. :D

They have a new Oil Metering Pump that will fix the premature wear, I know that. Is this what they are talking about? I wish the tranny was new. Still having syncro issues.

approx 1 1/2 yrs ago if I remember correctly a fellow by the name of Judge Itto mention that this engine would have premature seal wear and a lost of compression. He ran the dog do-do out of his car. But this is a scary thread. I have a little over 20k and am starting to have rough idle problems. I ran some techron through and it has helped and it's mostly non existant now, still i do feel a slight power loss at 6k but it does kick iat 7k. What about us guys that have a few mods on our cars, revi intake, a light flywheel and catback etc. If we have serious problems with the engine I wonder if Mazda will give us problems because of the bolt on's?

I am not saying this is totally correct but it does address the question.

I read somewhere that mods will not nullify the warranty, unless the manufacturer can prove that the mod is the exclusive cause of the problem. Anyway, that is what I heard. To me it is worth looking into.

That's what i heard about nullifying warranty. But whose burden is it to prove? If we have that burden, it becomes difficult. That's why I guess to bring the car to stock once you start having these problems.

I believe that some lawyer type on the forum posted that the burden of proof is on Mazda (which does make sense). But how many people are willing to take them to court with all the associated costs? And I believe that a dealer can still refuse service as well.

BTW, I just found out my dealer is replacing another 8 engine right as well, similar circumstances. I am so pumped, I get mine back tomorrow!

Well,l 26000 miles and a new engine being installed........car would lose power at 4000RPM. Dealer had to call Mazda to get the scoop on the problem. I'm still waiting for a final diagnosis. Hope this isn't a preview of future items!!!!! Anyone else out there with the same problem? What was the cause?

This thread is heart breaking for me. I was set on getting an RX8, even with the mileage issues and the fact that power wise it wasn't as "beefy" as some other cars out there. I like the look of it, the feel of the rotary, the sound, and the handling. However, with these kind of engine problems, there is no way I can justify the purchase. Now, yes this is a new car, and new cars have issues, but if they do, I don't buy them . I'll still be keeping an eye on this car, maybe Mazda will find a way to fix this (and yes I know there are cars out there that probably run fine), but this is more of a "last straw" type thing.

*Sigh* I really don't what else to get as there is nothing else that really competes in my opinion. Maybe I'll roll the dice and get one anyway!! Either way, I'm kinda discouraged about this. Guess I'll hang on to my current car a little longer.

Just realize that this is a small percentage. The majority of us have no engine problems. Remember that on boards like this you hear more complaints then compliments due to human nature. I mean I could talk about all the things that work 100 percent on my car but who wants to hear that.

I am also a prospective buyer feeling the same as the above poster. I've been pretty set on buying an 8 despite the gas mileage and some of the tempermental behaviour i read about. but i am now quite nervous about this car. complicating matters is the fact that nothing else out there really interests me. i really do love this car. i'm just very worried about getting caught up in endless trips to the dealer. i may still buy tho! sigh.

I wouldn't let this thread deter you from buying one. There are over 100,000 8s produced worldwide and this seems to be pretty isolated. I'm sure if the numbers were crunched it would be less than 1%. If there were 100 total that would be .1%.

I wonder if the failures have anything to do with the Monday / Friday auto workers myth. Friday the rotary assemblers are thinking about the weekend and Monday they're too hung over to do their job.

Thanks Paulie for the encouragement! I prolly will end up getting an 8. Also, Sorry to hear about your troubles Mazdaspeedgirl, but it IS encouraging to hear that despite all your troubles with the car you are still sticking with it!

It seems that in this thread (if i'm not mistaken) people who are having this done all or most seem to be in warm weather climates. Would that have any effect? I'm in the Los Angeles valley where air tems can typically get above 100 right now.

Paulie thats actually pretty close- sources at MNAO say about 100 low power 4-port engines are on order because of this issue. Mattzen- yes the issue is related to high temp areas. They have teams of engineers in several towns trackign downt he problem. most recently , last week, they were in Las Vegas. The majority of replacements are in Nevada and Texas.
