New engine CEL

New engine CEL
Hi everybody, if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.
Just replaced engine under warranty. (have to say Mazda was very professional-no hassles, dealer was a disaster though, constantly tried to rip me off. But more on that later.)
On way home cel started to go on and off.
Next day cel started switching from blinking to solid.
Next day swapped coils, plugs, wires - still solid-blinking cel.
Oil is full, oil cap is on, gas cap is on. Car seems to run 100 percent fine.
Only thing I can think is catalytic? Just wanted some opinions before I go to a shop blind.
I tried turning the car on and off 3 times last time I turned it off - to try to cycle the cel off. Noticed that there was more backfiring than usual when revving a little (not red line).
Please no "why did you drive it with the cel on", or go back to the dealer.
Thank you,

A flashing CEL is ALWAYS a misfire.
ALWAYS. It's part of the ECU programming.
So take a look at this thread: https://www.rx8club.com/tech-garage-...t-here-222280/

Thanks for the link.
Dealer said cel was due to coils - quoted me 1200. So I just did myself for 450 But it seems it wasn't the case regardless. I probably would have walked out 5000 lighter, wanted me to do clutch too for 1100 with engine already out. Starter and battery too. I can't go back there.
No code reader - will go to a rotary specialist. but if it is the cat, looks like its a 1000 job
. Hopefully it's covered (2007)

cat is 8yrs 80,000 miles under US Federal mandated warranty (if you are in the US)
The DIY price for the coils, plugs, and wires in the US is ~$180 to $220, so even the $450 is awfully high.
Did you read through the misfire thread? There is far more there than just the ignition. It's the top of the list, so skip that part.

Apparently Canada has the same warranty. I actually ordered from Atkinson rotary (racing beat wires) hope that doesn't void the warranty - don't want to replace old wires - just so a dealer can replace - and I re replace.
Possibly maf, fuel pump or cat. Well, I don't have a. Code reader, so off to the mech I go. Will update.
Thanks again.

Maybe ill pick up an obd2 scanner and see for myself. Seems like there is an iPad dash commander that scans codes somehow. Too.
Seems too easy to just download an app, turn on your car and read codes???? Anybody have any experience.

Ya - starting to find that out... To be fair the coil et al were due.
I can't find much info on iPod-iPad obd interfaces. Seems that dash command and rev are the apps of preference, and only require a Bluetooth connector and you're off. Any experience?

Thanks Charles,
I unhooked the battery for 5 minutes, then did the 20 step step, turned car on and no engine light.
TC was flashing until I warmed it up and restarted. After second start, everything was good, and no CEL.
I was sure to give it a good run to clean out the exhaust. after 3 key cycles and 20 minutes of driving, still no CEL. Hopefully it stays off.....
Thanks again to all.
REMEMBER TO RESET THE COMPUTER. should be a motto on this forum..
