New owner - throttle/gas delay?

The throttle reponse is lagged like 1/2 second on my new RX8. When I take it in for the first oil change im going to complain about this.
Has anyone else having this issue had it corrected by the dealer? I think my '98 S10 had better throttle response.

There is some amount of damping applied to the throttle in every car. For a sports car, there is less damping so the throttle is more responsive to driver input, while in a luxury car the throttle response ramps up at a slower rate for smoother, more comfortable throttle tip-in/tip-out. The damping is controlled by the PCM as someone else mentioned. Even with very little throttle damping, there is some lag between the time the accelerator is depressed and the time the throttle plate starts to move, and the throttle position ramps up smoothly rather than instantaneously. Otherwise, even a very light throttle input would result in a terrible clunk and bucking of the car as the gear teeth slam together. The lag will always be noticeable, especially if you just quickly blip the throttle while in neutral.
Regarding the advantages of ETC, I copied this from one of my old posts:
Some advantages of ETC (electronic throttle control) include easier implementation of TCS and DSC (ETC limits throttle when PCM senses wheel slip), cruise control (no pedal actuators required to modulate pedal position to maintain speed), and packaging (no mechanical cable required).
Also, for the automatic transmission vehicles, ETC can modulate throttle during a shift to improve shift quality and acceleration continuity. The one funny thing about ETC and auto trans vehicles is that manufacturers are "playing" with the torque demand map so that WOT (wide open throttle) occurs at lighter pedal position. For instance, if a vehicle has a pedal with 14 degrees of travel, the PCM might be programmed such that WOT is attained at 6 degrees. The problem is that the response may be extremely sensitive for the first 1/3 of pedal movement, and completely flat for the last 2/3. That is very bad in my opinion, but they are trying to make the vehicle "feel" faster than it actually is. IMO, it is better to mimic a mechanical throttle response.

First off, what is an N-Scan?
Second, I've never driven a car that had a 1/2 second lag in throttle response other than the RX8.
Lastly, is there any way to fix it? Anyone have any experience with a dealership?

The N flash (scan is the wrong term) is the latest version of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM, aka ECU) firmware; it's the code that runs the engine. The dealers are now all trying to update the cars to have the M or N flash, so as to avoid the flooding problems that emerged with the earlier firmware versions.
There is no such delay on my RX-8; I do think something's wrong with yours.
This is what warranties are for; that would bug the **** out of me and I would get it fixed, whatever it took. The N flash might do it, I suppose. But I would also look at the sensor attached to the gas pedal, and the butterfly valve motor on the throttle body. (That's just a wild-*** guess, though)

Ah N flash im a retard, yah I don't think they will flash mine it's a new 2005. I though it only applied to 2004 models.
Either way I have to take it in, in early april for it's first oil change I'll bitch about it when I make the apointment. It may not be a full 1/2 second but it is noticable, noticeable enough I have to compinsate for it when shifting...

Regardless, what you describe is NOT normal. I have driven dozens of different cars, from Mercedes to Toyotas to Miatas to BMWs to Porsches to ... you name it, and my RX-8's throttle response is up there with the best of them.

How much of an issue is this? Ok, so I can't make my car sound like a 787B at idle... big deal. (BTW if you haven't heard 787B sound clips... http://www.mymazdarotary.com/mazda_r...87b_videos.htm).
As for real throttle reponse, eg blipping the throttle to match revs when coming into a corner or rolling on the gas at 7k+ coming out of a corner, I've never felt lag, and thats where it matters right

well my 8 is 2 months old and my throttle response is beautiful. They have orderred a recall on 04 and 05s though and mine is included (built june 05)
I had a throttle sensor malfunction yesterday which apparently was caused by a faulty pcm. id definately get it checked out - it may be recalled anyway. this malfunction was also the cause of my rough idling problem which only popped up 3 days earlier so get in your dealer before something worse could happen
