I have 2004 with 37K miles and for about 2K miles been noticing metallic noise from engine when in to high a gear for the acceleration speed.
Went to the dealer and he said we have had a few of these and MAZDA SAID:
Dealer should remove the computer and send it to Mazda (3 days). Mazda will reprogram it and must do something else (since need to send comp in).
If that does not fix the problem then REPLACE THE ENGINE (5 days).
Anyone know what is going on?
I thought the dealer just tuned the car wrong because:
The gas mileage dropped 1-2 mpg and sounded like miss fire of plug.
Since the engine is a rotary the miss fire sound was different.

Yes same problem
Sounds like you have the same problem.
The dealers that have not seen this problem would make you think you need to use high-test fuel but the user manual for RX8 says it is OK to use Regular.
During the couple thousand miles I drove it with this problem I switch to higher octane and it helped but did not fix the problem.
My dealer (in Carlsbad CA) has seen this on other RX8s and has talked with Mazda. Some dealers may not have seen it.
I am sure a field bulletin will be out about this.

I seem to be having the same problem. The car runs fine, but my AT gets a scary popping/clicking sound right around 6k rpm when in 3rd. "Spark Knock" sounds about right. I take my foot off the gas and everything seems to go back to fine.
