Well after reading all 9 pages of this topic, ive had simalier issues. I got my 2004 RX8 used with almost 68k miles, i have now almost 92k miles, the problem started around 91.3k miles. unknown if the engine had been replaced before. Heres what ive done so far. Replaced 2 coils which greatly improved the starting of the car. had 1 weak trailing and 1 weak leading coil. both new coils went on the leading. 2 new spark plugs in the leading. Spark plugs wires were replaced. No exhaust leaks or rattleing there. Castrol 5w20 oil wont put anything else in my car. MAF cleaned. K&N air filter, put it in when i got the car. Oil consuption isusally about a quart or so every 3k miles, normal? no premix. Oil preasure is between the halfway and 3/4 mark, normal? I usally run 89oct. Used B-12 Chemtool fuel system cleaner, Seafoam and octance booster, no change. Had my step brother in the car with me and the car was making a noise simalier to what a previous user posted, kinda like a cow mooing, idle is sorta rough, power loss in a varity of rpm ranges, cant get past 7.5k rpm in 3rd gear anymore, becomes gutless, 4th gear cant go past 5k rpm. When its first started sounds like it has an exhaust leak/growling but goes away. Will try a coolant flush. Did notice coolant was leaking out the overflow tube slightly. Daily driver.

Thread revival. My car is laggy at about 5k rpm and up. Very loud raspy sound after 5k rpm. I created a thread about this issue and most people led me to believe it was my CAT. Installed a BHR midpipe and the issue is still there at above 5k rpm except alot louder and raspier with the pipe.
* Coils are brand new jsut changed
* Spark plugs and wires changed about 10,000 km ago
* engine compression was tested about a year and a half ago and its slightly lower than minimum on front rotor so im assuming that could be the issue
* Car is going in for compression test again next month in hopes of a new engine and hopefully that will fix the issue
This video is before the midpipe !!

I had something similar before mt extended warranty finished. They changed the coils, plugs, fuel injectors and it still was there, but not as bad as yours sounds. They changed my engine and I still had hesitation. So I took apart the CAI and noticed one of the screens inside the tubing (there are 2 screens) were falling out of position thereby creating uneven air flow through the MAF. Put the screen back about 10 inches apart from each other and "voila"!! Car ran much smoother. Take the CAI apart and see if your screens are in place and properly spaced from one another as per the instructions. Next test and/or clean the MAF. That's all I know. Good luck and keep us posted. If the car cannot exceed 5K RPM or really strubbles to do so, check the cat and the 2 oxygen sensors....

Unfortunately i dont own one Scott. I was thinking its the CAI issue as well. I had the screens shift on me before to the point where i glued them inside the rubber housing. I will try to take it apart again and clean my MAF. Either way when WCS did a compression test it had lower compression on front rotor so either way its going in soon for a compression test from Mazda and hopefully a new engine.

Just wonder if anyone actually got solved this problem ??
Bit of background:
Recently I came across very cheap rx8 that needed some work, so I decided use this car as project and keep later as weekend car. It's a 04 6 port 231bhp with 67k miles 6 speed. By the look of the engine seals seams that there was work done on previously. it also has that grumbling noise and lose of power after driving for a bit. If I drive hard its gets hard to start worm or if I give few min it will restart with no problem. It will starts cold very easy and has nice pull before grumbling kick's in. It can run on idle and worm up to full working temperature and all would be fine then, I can stop and restart with no hassle. I have no error codes showing after running true. Also I have no cat as old cat glowed red so I decided do de-cat. I have also noticed that engine gets pretty hot and looks like there is a cooling issue.
New Parts changed:
* Battery
* Coils
* Leads
* Plugs
* WALBRO 340 FUEL PUMP
After changing coils I noticed that I got more power and grumbling noise got shifted up to around 5.5-6K+ where previously was starting at 4.5+
so by reading all this 10page thread I found out lots of solutions, but none of them really seam to be solving the problem.
Any idea or advice will be appreciated.

Unfortunately I think the general consensus is that a rebuild/replacement is the only "permanent" fix. My rx8 lasted me 2 years under those conditions, the only thing seeming to reduce it was running injector cleaner or seafoam in the gas.

05 6port with 65k miles.
Final solution for me was to get a compression test. This showed strong numbers for all but the exhaust cycle of rotor two, which was around a 2 if I remember correctly. Consensus was that when the CAT failed, the heat warped that seal just enough to lose power when the car heated up. I was lucky that I still had a couple months on my warranty so Mazda put in a new engine and new CAT. Runs flawless now.
Unfortunately, a new engine or a rebuild may be the only way to solve this issue.

Your situation and remedies describe my situation EXACTLY. I gutted the failed cat because Mazda wouldnt believe me, and this helped quite bit, but the problem would still happen when the engine really heated up on long drives.

my numbers was all around 5.5 - 6 at 280rmp when I compression tested witch is low, but it say it should still run. my warranty I guess is now long gone. so next thing is it my not in a right thread, but I wonder if many reuse old housing on engine when they rebuild it?
thanks for info!!

Please Help
Ok so sorry for the thread revival but I have been reseaeching issues on the rx8 and this is the closest thread I could find to the problem I am having. A little background on the car.. She has 69k, new plugs, coils, wires, air filter and oil change. I have gone through and checked all the wires and even resecured the spark plugs just to make sure. The maf was taken out and cleaned with maf cleaner while the coils were being done. I recently installed a full AP exhaust with midpipe and since has been throwing p0420 code as expected.
Now for the problems.. I get up to 5th-6th gear and for some reason I dont have any power until I hit 4k. After I get off the throttle it gets even worse and you can feel it (power loss) through all gears except 1st and second. At a stop light the car almost feels like it wants to die but picks itself up and continues to rattle like crazy. I took it out on a trip today and threw a code p0301 which I belive is rotor 1 misfire. I'm at a loss and I'm assuming my next course if action is to go in for a compression test.
Again, sorry for the thread revival-reply but I'm lost. I'm new to this site and to my car so I'm trying to get her back on the road where she belongs. I have a video of the engine noise and some exhaust backfire. Disregard the rattle, it touches the frame😑
