Is this normal

Hey everyone. My new rx was just dropped off today. Quick question for you.

Ive noticed 3 things

1 from a semi cold startup theres white foam in the oil, similar to that of apiston engine with a blown head gasket (apex seal problem?) I know it does put more oil in the engine on a cold start and ive heard from the owner it happens and has happened for a while.

secondly it seems to missfire almost blowing smoke rings in this cold weather, it goes away for a little bit after some revs but will come back a little later. It is not violent it is just an odd experience as m new to these rotarys. like a slight misfire but it has new plugs and wires

Lastly it almost sounds like some sort of disc is spinning in the tranny and when i push in the clutch the sound goes away. sounds like a slight scraping sound, also heard this may be normal...

Not sure please let me know

Not being an @ss, but start here:

and here:

It should answer all your questions...............but the bottom line(to ease your mind), it doesn't sound like anything that Abby-normal.............assuming you are just hearing little puffs at idle and assuming that it's misfires?
I take it no CELs and how long since coils been changed?

The tranny..............well it could be a few things, but without really hearing it and being there....hard to say..........it could be normal.....or not.

1) normal
2) possible coolant seal failure, possible ignition dying, possible vacuum leak
3) release bearing

Ok thank you that thread helped me choose my car. The car seems to be fine when its warmed up. Now is that bearing sound normal or is that something to be worried about? Just looking for a straightforward answer

Depends on the noise. I recommend having a local member take a listen to it if you aren't sure. Even brand new and properly lubricated, they can make a bit of noise. However, it's a different noise than when it's getting ready to shatter on you, and in between sounds different as well.

Not something that is easily diagnosable over the web.

1. normal, its just condensation. due to the construction of the engine, to get water from the cooling system into the oil requires a freeze plug under the front cover to fail, and this is very very rare. in 20 years of playing with rotaries, i've seen 1.

2. check the coils first, and go from there.

3. the "spinning" noise is from the 80lbs of gears that are spinning, its actually surprising how loud some of these are, an oil change might be in order, and synthetic being thinner can be a little louder. if the noise comes in the cabin, especially in the even gears, its the rubber shift boot between the body and shifter.

Excellent thank you,

changed the plugs and wires everything is good now. The previous owner used synthetic so that may be the cause of the sound. Thank you everyone.

As for the foam in the oil ill keep an eye out, it seems as though its when it has been sitting cold this happens ill keep an eye on it

thank you

I'm encountering the same foaming issue ...this is my first winter with it so its kind of setching me ut...I understand the foaming is normal when its cold out but should it be so severe as to turn the oil light on?

It should not turn the oil light on. Does the oil pressure gauge move at all when that happens?

No, no pressure gauge movement, it usually sits right past the middle mark during normal driving. I try to check the oil level via dipstick when this happens and its usually foamed all the way up the dipstick tube. The light only comes on after driving about twenty miles or so, could it be the up and down of hill driving (I live in the Cincinnati area...lots of hills) that is making it that much worse?

So even if it's all foamed up you should still see some real oil at the tip of the dipstick. If you're not seeing that, then it's possible you are actually low on oil. I wouldn't drive like that.

The oil light is ONLY a oil level sensor. If it comes on you are already CRITICALLY low on oil. Get some in it ASAP.

The oil pressure gauge is a dummy gauge. It has 3 positions:
1) All the way left, engine is off
2) roughly pointed up, engine is on
3) all the way right, only possible during some diagnostic procedures

There isn't even an oil pressure sensor in the car. It is functionally worthless unless you are doing an ECU reset and it sweeps right to confirm that the reset has occurred.

well **** me running...I still have some actual oil at the end of the dipstick so I'm not overly concerned about it.

That being said...once it warms up I'm going to pull the sensor and replace it see if that helps.

the light will be on if its like 1/2 or 3/4 quart low, so it comes on really early
