I am currently doing a turbo install on my 06, the exhaust manifold nuts were ridiculously hard to get off, and in the process (hand tools only) I managed to strip out two of the studs.
Question for the crew here, and most likely a follow up question or two; is this something I can or should even attempt to try and fix myself? or should I just take it to the local shop.

 

Pull the studs and put in new ones. They come out.

 

the stud is out, that's the problem, its stripped in the engine, sorry for not being more specific, would a simple tap and dye do the trick or is it a little more complicated than that

 

Thats a hard decision to make post a pic of the bolt. A tap might work and shouldn't hurt anything if used right, but don't break it or you'll never get it out.

To do it right you should drill it and go with a larger stud or a helicoil, but i don't know the thickness of the block so you could break into something or get it dangerously thin.

I think drill larger would be okay but its a big risk.

You could possibly fill it with jb weld and drill and tap to the right size but it would still be weaker.

thanks for the tips and info guys, heilcoil was what I was thinking too goddess but wasn't sure, I have some actual mechanic friends coming over to help out but they know very little about rotarys so I figured I would ask the pros. Seems like something I think we can handle thanks again!

Nothing ends badly if something is learned, but i'll ask ..... why do you say that? all input is welcome and asked for.

 

he said that because depends on which stud hole u broke/strip, when u use any kind of tap, it might break the housing/iron. and when that happens, it's game over for your engine and you MUST rebuild it.

This is why I always spray **** loads of PB Blaster/WD pentrating spray, every couple of hours for 2-3 days before I even touch them.

and I am always "extremely" careful when removing studs, after the old one is removed, I always put anti-seize on new ones before I install them.

 

thats pretty much what im worried about ... to be honest im down right terrified, it was the bottom center stud on the manifold, as difficult as all the nuts were to remove, im somewhat amazed that more didn't strip out or even break.

actually i said it because turboing an 8 is a task that should require intricate knowledge of the engine itself first. it's just my pessimism talking, if you can afford the possible outcome then it's ok.

you'll just need to drill the hole one size larger and then heli-coil it or install a time-sert. be sure not to drill too deep and it must be straight. tape up and block any open ports on the engine to keep debris out and move anything out of your way to get to the hole, it's more of a job to do with the engine out but with some patience it could be done in the car.
