oh yes the MPG thread
yes yes yes i know the RX8 is not known for high gas mileage and yes i have looked over the thread on poor gas mileage but 9 miles to a gallon? Is that even realistic? It seems a little extreme to me, i mean i know its a "sporty" car but 9 miles to a gallon seems a little far fetched but thats all i can get out of my 8, whether i feather the throttle or slam it, 9 miles to a gallon consistently.
There is a lot of stuff that could contribute to that mechanically but are there any things i could check or replace to start off with before i have mazda check it?
2004 Rx8... bought it used with 110k and im at 111k now...
any ideas?

After that:
Coils, Plugs, Wires
Clogged Cat. Converter. (you'd have no top end power)
Air filter

Yes. I get 9mpg on the track. But I can't imagine how you could city drive and get anything similar. And the OP states he gets the same mpg regardless how he drives. Unless you idle in traffic for an hour every day.

the most i can get out my tank is 155 miles so 155/15.9 is about 9.74 gallons per mile... i know my math, especially something as simple as that....?
i called mazda and they said that i have no recalls available to me so i guess im going to just have to pay for the check up and see if it needs flashed... or if something major needs done

^there is your problem
Fill the car back up and see how many miles your get. Then fill your car up again and record the number of gallons your put in it. Then divide your miles your got by the number of gallons your put in. That will give you your actual mileage.
That is still low for average mileage even assuming you only put 10 gallons in, so get it checked out. The only time I get 15mpg is commuting when its like 0 degrees out and I'm in city traffic.
Even on almost E your still have some left in there. The most I have ever put in even on e was a little under 14 gallons.

Wow, you actually got the gas tank so low you could put 15.9 gallons in there. Most I ever could squeeze in was about 15.5 gallons or so.
I tend to get 17-19 mpg on everyday driving and 21-23 on the highway.
I once got 7-8 mpg but that was a track day.
I keep track of my mileage using the trip on the odometer.

Realize that 15.9 is bone dry to max filled including the neck.
Going to around "E" and NOT the light produces about 13.9
Not a huge difference but kinda make sure you are calculating it right. You'd be suprised at some of the odd ball questions that come up. We can't expect everyone of us to be a Mensa member ya know!
I'd take the suggestions about going the Rosenthal Mazda sight and looking at the TSB's and recalls. Maybe ask the dealer to prove you had latest TSB's? I know you said that they think your up to date, but I believe at least when they do the flashes, you are supposed to get a sticker placed on the underside of your hood near the front. The cleaning/latest flash could help you out?????

Yep, just fill up and reset either the A or B trip odometer.
Then when you next fill up note the gallons fueled.
Then simply divide the recorded trip odomenter miles by the re-fill gallons.
edit: I rarely compute my mpg. I can't handle the truth!!

MPG=number of miles driven from full tank fillup to full tank fillup divided by number of gallons put in to the tank to fill it up.
Remember it is how much it takes to fill your tank not how big you think your tank is. You're not using all 15.9 gallons between fillups.
