Oil metering pump gasket leak?

Has anyone else had this issue? It's been ongoing in my car for a couple of weeks, now. I took it to Mazda who diagnosed the problem (after using a dye to find the source of the leak) as a leak coming from a gasket related to the oil metering pump. My problem is they were VERY quick to state this would be covered under the bumper to bumper warranty and not the powertrain warranty which, per the Mazda website, states both the pump and seals/gaskets are covered under warranty. My car has 55,000 miles on it so the bumper to bumper warranty has been long gone. The engine is 300 miles over the 12,000 mile warranty is on it so I can't use that either.

Mazda wants to replace the OMP and gaskets and charge me $1300+ labor for it. They are very adament that it's not covered under warranty to repeat that. Why they'd need to replace the pump is beyond me if they state a gasket is the cause of it.

I have called Mazda NA and opened a claim with them, and all they've done so far is try their hardest to not call me back. I'm hoping to hear a response on Monday, but all I get so far is that they've "talked to the dealership," and are "working with the warranty department to see if it's covered."

I guess part of this is a rant of frustration since I'm still covered under the powertrain warranty, but has anyone had this service performed and A.) Was it covered?, and B.) If so, what part of the warranty covered it?

Thanks in advance, everyone.

oil metering pump is required for engine operation. so it should be part of the powertrain warranty.

ask to speak with the region manager, sometimes its hard to get morons to understand what is OMP. u tell them *the pump's seal* has a failure, they will think oh, its not covered, its not part of the engine.

It's on the powertrain list...don't let them screw you over ...

It's aalso probably leaking cause they screwed up when they re-installed it on the short block when they replaced your engine

you need to put some high temp rv sealant around the omp gasket and just a little behind it---presto---no more leaks!

That's how I view it, so I'm not willing to let this go without a fight.

That's what I'll have to do, because Mazda NA, the dealership, and the regional manager have now all denied the claim and told me it's not getting fixed under warranty. They state it's under the grounds of the MOP not being under the powertrain warranty but rather the bumper-to-bumper warranty.

Reading from my Canadian (I know you're in the US) handy-dandy 2006 warranty booklet....

quote/

Page 16. Powertrain Warranty 60 months or 100,000 km, whichever comes first.

Page 17. Rotary engine (for RX-8)

(specific components covered)
Rotor housings, eccentric shaft, side housings, stationary gears, rotors, main bearings, tension bolts, intake manifold, front cover, flywheel, oil pan, oil pump, oil pump chain, metering oil pump, engine mounts, gaskets and seals.

/quote (the bold is my doing)

So, I am very interested to hear what the difference is in your case? I thought the US warranty was the same as Canada?

At least, you should demand that they give you something in writing - showing their diagnosis of the cause of the failure (in Ford warranty-speak, they choose a 'causal' part number for the claim which determines warranty) and stating the reason for the denial.

The oil pump is covered under warranty. The MOP isn't.

That's what I was told, and I can't find any documentation on it that claims otherwise.

OMP is held on by 3 bolts. Just drop the bottom plastic tray, and unbolt it. Replace the gasket with whatever you'd like, and reinstall.

If you need a new omp, call mazmart and get a replacement. There is no reason to pay $1300 for it. But I agree that the OMP should be counted as part of the powertrain warranty.
