Ok so I checked my AEM CAi air filter and found a large amount of oil in it (must have over filled) so I was wondering if I can clean the oil out or do I need a new filter.

 

I would go ahead and buy a new filter.

Also make sure to check/clean your MAF with MAF cleaner after cleaning out the oil. Bad things can happen if oil gets on that sensor. For example, one forum member on here had a Typhoon II intake and the oil from the filter leaked onto his MAF which caused him to run rich. His CAT filled up with unburned fuel and one day the CAT caught on fire while he was driving down the highway.

Yeah ive been having issues lately zorst tips where extra black recently and car felt lumpy so il be on the MAF tomorrow and will get my hands on a catch can aswell.

 

You dont need a catch can unless you dont know how to add your oil correctly... Overfilling can be avoided if your not a retard...

 

Even if you fill it up perfectly every time you can still get oil in there. That's why its best to have a catch can.

The dealer overfilled mine and the oil ate away the rubber portion of the filter. The filter literally fell appart. If you decide to keep it clean it like crazy good.

 

Gonna see how much the filters are if there not to much il just replace it.

 

I would just replace it.....if you can't afford a filter, this is NOT the car to have!
AND................yeak clean that MAF and get a catch can as you already know!



Yes, the oil can get in there others ways, but is mainly due to overfilling, so I'd have a little discussion with whomever is doing your oil changes. Even if it happens to be the "Mechanically Challenged" one!

 

Yeah its really not hard to just NOT overfill it... Add a quart every 1000 miles and your good... and add ~4 quarts on oil change... Not rocket science....

 

Problem I have is I do lots of short journeys so I burn oil quickly but in no orderly fashion.

 

I check my oil at every fill up.

 

If you have problems topping off your oil, you're gonna have alot worse problems down the road. Its not hard, I have short trips/journeys as well, just add oil.

If your add the low mark on the dip stick your about a quart off and a little off... Just add a quart, you dont have to keep it at F the whole time, as long as its withing the low and full line you will be fine.

 

I know I know I probably could do it I just tend to be in a rush and just pour a bit in tbh last top up I didnt think id gone over but its hard to tell at the minute the crappy weather hear causes moisture to get in the oil giving us milky gunk when you pull the dipstick out.

It's better to do that than suffer the consequences down the road. I'll check mine about every two fillups. No wait.....the reality is I usually check it once a week on the weekend.
If you make it a habit, then it's easy. I've just made it part of my overall routine at some point on a Saturday or Sunday.

And for God's sake, use the dip stick when adding oil, that's what it's there for. Add some, then check, then add more if needed. It ain't rocket science.

Or just know that if its at the min line its a quart short of oil. so if its halfway its half a quart.

I check my dipstick every fill up and I premix every fill up.
