P0126

Hey guys engine CEL came on this morning checked with scan tool and i got...

P0126 Insufficient coolant temperature for stable operation ON 2
Thermostat ´ (See DTC P0126, P0128 )
P0128 Coolant thermostat problem ON 2 Thermostat

Last week i had a small quarter sized drop of anti freeze on my spotless shop floor, so i know it was from my car. The car sat for a day and a half from last time i drove it with no problems. Are the problems related? I could find no signs where coolant came from and it has not leaked again? Although it looked as if it was under the center plate.

I have a 2004 rx8 six speed, 48,600 miles, original motor

any help appricated

I had a few spots of coolant and it turned out to be my upper radiator hose. While I replaced it I went ahead and changed my thermostat and water pump. Ever changed your thermostat? Could be stuck open? No idea just guessing.

Never had that code.

If it leaked, then it has a leak. You need to find and fix it. Make sure the system is full and then pressure test it for leaks.

As far as the code, it sounds like the t-stat is stuck open and not allowing the coolant to warm up properly. Have you monitored the tempurature? How long is it taking to reach 180 degrees? I don't know how long the ecu wants to see, but if it is more then 10 minutes, even in a cold climate, there is clearly something wrong.

well will ddo the pressure test and most likely t-stat. i dont have a temp gauge just stock one that does not read in degres so not sure how long it takes to get to 180? it does however take more than twenty min for the needle to get to regular operating position

Yeah, your t-stat is done. My Jetta threw that code for the same symptoms...
Have you ever changed out your coolant?

Any mods or work done near the rad? Near hoses? Look for cracks in those areas

I know this is an old thread.
I had P0126 code twice and confirmed that the coolant temperature was lower than normal and only briefly rose and stayed at the normal place on the temperature gauge.
Installed a new thermostat, temperature now always at the correct place on the gauge, and haven't had the code return.
