AZ P0420 cel

Hi,
So I have had my 06 rx8 for awhile now with the following- new reman a yr or so ago, BHR midpipe as well as ignition, HKS single exit exhaust and K&N typhoon intake, low temp fan mod, and then coilovers and other megan racing suspension but anyways I have been getting a p0420 code as of late but I have had these mods for about a year and ive never gotten the code.

I know the midpipe sometimes will throw it up after searching on rx8club.

any insight will be helpful thx!

ps. no over heating or issues just the code comes off but I wipe it with a scanner it goes away for a couple days or week.

Whats the problem here?

you have no cat thanks to the bhr mid pipe and your car is telling you that you have no cat (p0420)

p0420 means the PCM detected the catalytic converter is not doing it's job right.
You have the BHR midpipe, AFAIK, it comes with two versions, catted or catless.
If you have the catted midpipe and p0420 poped up, your cat is likely clogged.
If you have the catless, it is also normal, our car is not always consistent on checking those.
I have gutted my cat and has never P0420.

Ya I remember Charles saying he had 2 versions, I actually work down the street from BHR, and he sold me a mid pipe that he tested for his batch (it was like 1 of 3 he tested) that he was gonna sale to the public. ill unbolt it and check it out I don't remember if mine had catted version or not. if I do I just scrape/take out the honey comb stuff out correct?

Check with Charles about warranty before you scrap the catalyst.

That said, it should be easy to tell from the outside if it has a cat or not. Before where the O2 sensor plugs in will either be smooth pipe (not cat), a long thick section (resonator) or a short very thick section (cat).

Also the catted version is quite a bit more expensive, so you can tell from your bill, perhaps.

lol he hooked it up for me since it was a test subject (a few start ups and drives) so it was a nicer price tag than a usual retail one from him. but I will snag some pictures when im off work and upload them.
thanks guys for the info and quick with replies!

IIRC, the cat in the midpipe does not come with a warranty, so I guess he can scrap it with no problem

Your pipe has no catalytic, that's why you are getting the code

The code doesn’t mean that a cat converter is clogged, it just means it either isn’t functioning wrt emissions or in this case there isn’t one at all. That’s a resonator only midpipe.
