Pass smog on low compression?

8Forum,

Thanks for looking

I have a 2004 Auto with low compression 6.9-7.0 all around. My smog is due next month and I've been spending a bit of money on misc repairs. My question is whether or not I'm wasting my time due to the fact that if it doesn't pass smog then fixing misc issues for next months registration is pointless.

Anyone smog an 8 with low compression but an otherwise good running car? I get the typical hot start issues

Thanks

If that's at 250 rpm, it's borderline but not crazy failing. What rpm are those numbers at?
Could just be a question of ignition coupled with borderline compression that you could ride on for a while longer.

Can't help on the smog question, sorry.

Yes 250 rpm using mazda rotary checker. I have the black halo racing coils and mag plugs. Ignition was tested fine.

Any tricks to get it to pass smog on low compression? Would a new aftermarket cat help?

It's low, but it's not so low that it will completely stop you from passing. As long as you have a quality catalyst and no CELs you should be fine.

The cat has 55k on the odometer original since 2004 and was tested to be fine by the mechanic. I do have evap CELs though. I just didn't think the smog test station would pull codes?

P0441 Evap System Incorrect Purge Flow
P0442 EVAP system lead detection (small leak)
P0446 EVAP system vent control circuit problem
P2401 EVAP system leak detection pump control circuit low

It shouldn't be too difficult to get those issues fixed. At least here, a CEL is an automatic failure.

Could your fuel filler cap need a replacement?

Ditto, in New Jersey where I am, any CEL is an automatic fail. Get those cleared up and it should pass even with low compression.
