Possessed fan?
I'm not so much having a problem with the car, more of a question. When I start the car in the mornings(or nights) to go to work I hear a random clicking sound. Through investigation I find that the ticking sound is the fan turning on and off. This seems odd to me given that I just started the car 2 minutes earlier. The fan will come on for a few seconds then turn off. This happens at random intervals. Any ideas as to why this would be happening? Thanks in advance

I'm guessing you didn't buy this car new?
What year is it?
Do you know(if not new) if you might have the old Mazsport cooling fan mod in there or are you stock?
Look at the pick below. There is a hose that runs down the left side of the battery cover and if you have this mod, there will be a tee in the area I have circled in green. You will also have what is shown in the circle. I know it's hard to see, but it's the best I could do on short notice. Don't pay attention to the blue cable, that's just a grounding kit. What I'm after is........do you have a tee there and do you have that silver rounded object on one side of the tee?
other questions.........how is your coolant level?
Is it to the full line?
How old is it(coolant)?

sorry, I should have said in the first place. I didn't buy it new I got it about a month ago. It's an 05 mt. As far as mods, I bought it from a dealership that didn't even realize the brace it has is a mod( looks just like yours except doesn't say "mazdaspeed") also just found out it has protec? shocks and springs. It doesn't however have the silver thing pictured. the hose runs beside the battery box and straight to the motor. as far as the coolant age i'm not sure dealership provided no maintenance paperwork. I plan to get it flushed shortly anyway(60,000 miles). It is full however and the car doesn't overheat. Don't know if that helps P.S. that one clean engine bay!! Nice

Okay, well at least we know that. If you had that mod, it would explain why it cycles a little more frequently than normal.................so now I have to put back on the thinking cap.
It will do this more frequently when the A/C is on, but I think yours is starting to do it a little quicker than normal after start-up.

^..........Didn't think of that.....defroster...........what the hell is that? I'm in Florida! I've yet to even turn the heat on after 5 1/2 years except to check it.
Not sure about his location though.......but that's sort of equivalent to having the A/C on.
Just seems that if it's really only after two minutes of warm-up that this is a little fast to start that......no?

I'm in Ohio. Usually I don't have anything on when I start the car. When I got the cat replaced after getting the car they did the latest flash but unless they set the fan on temp to like 70 degrees I can't see that being the reason

Nope! If the defroster is on it also engages the compressor (A/C) and of course when the A/C clutch is engaged so are the cooling fans.
