Power Steering Rack failure?
Hey guys,
I did a search by subject, but couldn't find something matching exactly what I have. I took my 8 in to get the racing seat/harness installed and also have them look at why my steering seemed REALLY loose and why it seemed to "pop" when I had the wheels turned all the way to the right or left (backing out of driveway or parking lot). The shop (whom I do trust) said that they checked out the suspension, and narrowed down the culprit to the steering rack. They said that once they got to it and did some testing, not noticed some "grinding noises" within it. I only have a drivetrain warranty left, so this wouldn't be covered....and after dropping 1.5k in new tires/seat/harness/exhaust + installs....I'm hoping this is an easy fix. FYI -- no warning indicator lights ever game on. The car was up on jacks for 5 months during the winter and this started happening after I got her down and started driving her for the first time.

You may have just messed up the springs. Having all that weight for so long. Maybe it's just the springs popping out of their perch when you get to a full lock of the wheel.

That's originally what I thought it may have been. But the shop said they checked out the springs/shocks and all looked well. So they then decided to check out the steering rack and noticed grinding in it when doing their testing. I haven't seen it yet as I am at work. I find it hard to believe a car with 22k miles on it has a bad steering rack already. But I did notice that turning the wheel was VERY effortless, more so than normal, but I drive a FWD car as a daily driver, so I thought maybe it's just because I was used to the way FWD feels.
