Problem with MSP16 recall
Yesterday i dropped my car off at mazda for the msp16 recall and they called me today that the car keeps stalling and is not drivable. The sevice manager said i will have to pay 250 for a new set of spark plugs. I had no choice but to agree.
Something smells fishy to me. my car was running fine when i dropped it off. If anyone have any comments or suggestions please do help. Im in a pickle and my wallet is thin.
Thank you

Yes. Tell them it ran fine when you brought it in and you're not going to pay for something they screwed up. Spark plugs should not all the sudden cause this problem. Also do a quick search on spark plugs. $250 is a ridiculous amount to pay to change them. Granted they are expensive but it shouldn't be more than $100-$150 for parts and labor.
The recall should include any parts they have to replace to make your car run properly.

Oops. I cross thread posted.
That's crap and I would refuse to pay it and Call Mazda North America. They should authorize the recall work should pay for it or smack the dealer for screwing you.

Yeah, you been had by an unscrupulous dealer alright. When you pick up the car let them know you are aware of their scam and that you will be finding another dealer for future service. Then call Mazda Customer Support at the 800 number in your owners manual and let them know how you feel--in a calm, reasoned manner, of course.

do the work yourself, and always mentaion upfront, anything that is needed that is not covered by the recall, let me know, and ask us if you don't know before agreeing to anything. sparkplug can be next dayed for 100 bucks, and it takes 15 min of ur time to install it. plus, i bet i know what happened. your cat is gonna go next, i bet the dealer flooded ur vehicle.

It's possible. Many of us with '04s have had our engine replaced. There was a recall for thie. If this is the case it should definitely be for free under their recall.

it is a 04 6spd GT with 45k miles, but it was running normal before i brought it in. Yes and they said they are doing it for free. Im afraid they're going to see my cat back and deny my new engine. :[

Glad to hear it's going to be covered. Count yourself happy that you're getting a new motor just before the warranty expires.
I wish all car companies did this.

Do some research on this forum under engine recall/replacement and premix. You'll learn more about what's up with the '04s. They were not getting enough oil injection originally and so they had premature wear on the side and apex seals. They have since updated the PCM calibrations to inject more oil so we aren't seeing it as much on the '05s and later.
