Question regarding CEL codes P0300/P0336 and my baby's MAJOR loss of power.
Hi,
I have a stock 2004 RX8 GT Automatic. 97,000 and some change on it.
I was driving home from a trip and my CEL flashed. Then my car gradually lost a lot of power until the engine was being throttled down to only 3000 RPM. I was only able to drive about 68 coming home. what a bummer. No power on take off either. took me a full minute to get to 68. 0-60 in 60 i guess.
I have been driving with a CEL of P0420 as the dealer said I need a new cat and I just can't afford one yet. I've been relatively easy on the engine, though I do redline it occasionally to help fight off carbon buildup.
I had the codes checked and it's pulling P0300 and P0336. These are new to the loss of power issue.
The loss of power happened when i was in 3rd gear and accelerating. Got to about 5k rpm, the car hiccupped (best way i can describe it really) and then started to slow. I flipped to manual and shifted to 4th and I was able to cruise at about 85. After I stopped for a fill-up it started having the accel problems.
At first, first and third gear would rev to 5000, but not quickly, before it would shift itself. second and 4th wouldn't go past 3000. Then, as it started throttling itself back, the limit got lower and lower. Now it, as stated before, won't go past 3k at the best in all gears. If i try to go any faster than 68 in auto mode in 4th gear, it downshifts to 3rd and cuts my speed.
Any ideas what could be going on? I'm going to the dealer tomorrow to have it inspected and all that. My oil change needs to be done in about 600 miles, but the oil is good (i always keep an eye on my oil, silly injection system). My Trans fluid was low, but i topped it up before the trip.
Checked out my MAF sensor and it doesn't look dirty at all. My box filter is in good shape too.
On a side note, the traction control "skidmark" light came on when it happened. I didn't think anything of it at first until just now. We did have some ice on the roads last week, but it was fine when i was driving. I also hit the traction control switch and the light marking it off didn't come on. But I tried it again later and the light did come on.
I'm just lost, and I can't find anything in a search that has to do with this, though admittedly, i'm not very good with forum searches. Google isn't pulling anything up either.
Please help!
