Where ever the mechanic who changed your oil showed you the leak... You need to spend sometime under your car and look for that leak.

I've seen so mamy threads about this. Seems to be a common occurance/fault on the RX8. Not really a problem except annoying to look at. If you want to replace the faulty sensor, you will have to replace the oolant bottle with it which is quite pricy.

My Coolant light came on when I revved the car to red line in neutral (after it reached operating temperature). Other than that, it's never come on before.. This is on a 2005 RX8 Automatic, 60k miles.

I'm going to add coolant, I think the coolant does eventually evaporate, so occasionally it needs a fill. The engine only has about 15k miles.

Can someone please answer me this, how much coolant should a healthy rx8 use? Mine seems not to be using much, is it normal?

Using coolant?!?!

NONE!

Using coolant is always bad. Either you have a cooling system problem or are overheating and it's boiling through the overflow or you have a warped housing from an overheating and it's leaking into the housing. There are no acceptable or 'good' methods of 'using' coolant.

You are probably getting the fluid consumption mixed up with oil, which you should be burning a quart every 1,000 to 1,500 miles.

As a first poster, might want to check out my new owner's thread here: https://www.rx8club.com/new-member-forum-197/new-potential-owners-start-here-202454/

First off I'd like you to think really hard about what you just wrote, read it back to yourself and see if it still makes sense.

Once you've done that 3 times read what I wrote below.

A car should never use coolant... you either have a block in the system and its boiling over, in which case you need a full flush. Or your coolant seal is busted and you are leaking coolant into the engine.

Or the radiator cap is worn out and not sealing, so the coolant is slowly evaporating.

I read through here and didnt see a diffinitive answer, my lights coming on and off every now and again, usually doing highway speeds for more then 15mins and when I start up, I also experience power loss from it, coolant level is fine, temp gauge is fine, just swapped to bhr coils and new plugs, would a broken sensor cause power loss? if so could i just unplug it?

Okay, I'll play nice.

Go here............. https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-trouble-shooting-95/coolant-bottle-greatest-secrets-revealed-182793/

I will tell you that this has nothing to do with your power loss in my opinion, but look elsewhere for that, but the above link will answer anything you could want to know about the sensor.

Hi Guys

Sorry to dig up this thread but i have the cooling water warning sign on the dash constantly getting on my nerves despite of correct level of water and normal temperature
After reading this I have understood what is causing the problem.
No doubt about that.

The only doubt i have is that my RX8 is has a VIN nr: starting on JMZSE XXXXXX licensed in 25/07/2008 ( I am from Portugal by the way and the RX8 is a 40th anniiversary Rotary Engine Special Edition) and the dealers here in Portugal don't have any ideia of what an RX8 is so you would imagine my frustration.

I have to go to the dealer tomorrow because the car was bought as a service car and it is still in warranty until July of this year. I want to go there but i would like to have somthjing to tell them of this.

I don't know if I need the Tank and sensor or just the tank. I would like to arrive to the dealer tomorrow and say: "The problem is this and what is needed to do is bla bla bla.

Can you guys help me out to figure this thing out please?

Print this out and take it to the dealer. Also I think there was a TSB, so check that out. If there is... print it out too.

Thanks Razz1.
I have already print this out but what I am expecting is that they will look at this like we say here in Portugal "Like a donkey looking to a Palace"

I was trying to avoid tests and beeing without my car for days because here in Portugal they are a few RX-8 and my eidtion is the only one in the country.

Everytime i go to the dealer, as they very rarely see an RX8, they all look at the car with an oportunity to drivean Rx8.

So that I was trying to limit the choices. Let's see waht they willl say tomorrow. Keep you guys updated on the results

Thanks everyone for the help.
Just got back from the dealer and I am positively surprised.
I was received in a very good way.
Explained the problem and presented the TSB and the solution.
They agreed with everything I said and they told me that they were aware of the problem.
New complete expansion tank ordered, now I just have to wait for its arrival and fix this issue.

Again thank you for the help and assistance of all

( Keep you updated when all is solved )

I called my dealership to see if this was covered under warranty. My car is an '07 with 40k, they said I'd have to pay $180 to get this TSB fixed, is that true??

TSBs are not recalls. They will only be fixed for free if you have a warranty that covers that part. As the coolant bottle is not part of the engine core (8yr 100k), emissions (8yr 80k), or powertrain (5yr 60k), then it falls under bumper to bumper, which is 4yr 36k. So yes, you are outside of the bumper to bumper and would have to pay to have it repaired.

The cheaper option is to just order a new coolant bottle from Mazmart and replace it yourself.

Howdy to you as well Great Brit!
I have the same problem with my radiator light and was told also it is highly sensitive. I drive the same road to work every day and the light comes on in exactly the same place each time and goes out furtther down the road at the same place as well. as I am in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, I was thinking perhaps it had something to do with our high elevation.

I just un-plugged the cable after checking multiple times without losing any coolant. Dealership wanted $185 and did not want to spend the money on what I believe isn't really needed.

Agree with other posts about a bad design by Mazda.

I just check the coolant level, along with the oil level at home after the car is cool.

So far in owning the car for 2 months, I've seen this once myself.

There is a stickie on this, although I don't think it has the TSB in it:
