Rear Suspension

I have had my Rx8 since new 56 miles when I purchased it in 2007. It only has just over 18,500 on it and has given me absolutely no trouble at all. However I took a small road trip from Delaware to Colorado and it was in Colorado I noticed the problem. The clearance between the rear wheel and the top of the fender was less than it was in the front. When I got back to Delaware I took it to the dealer and he confirmed it was about 1" lower in the rear than the front. I have never had anything heavy in the rear of the car and have rarely carried more than one other person in it. At this point the car is completely stock no modifications. Is the factory suspension so bad that it dies after only 18k miles and 4 years of owning it? I have searched around and saw at least one post that mentioned the rear springs and shocks were weak. When I get back home I plan to take it back to the dealer and have them take a closer look at the problem but I wanted any and all inputs, thanks.
