Jamie http://www.mazdatrix.com/8turbo.htm Not that they are the final word, but interesting nonetheless. |
thats really alarmist. of course it isnt emissions legal- in california or states that also use CARB standards because they havent tried to get it passes or exempted. And it only voides the warranty if it is found to have caused the issue you are having- thats called the Magnusson- Moss act.
It will not prevent them from completing the recall work |

Parts information: F151-55-161 Heat insulator pad.....for your interest. Dennis |
Took my 8 in for the fuel tank/heat problem this morning after the dealer called me last week to alert me. Ended up driving home in a new Toyota Camry loaner car  Dealer has to keep my car for a day or so because they found the fuel tank had melted  No joke...those were their exact words...my fuel tank had melted. I guess there's something to this recall afterall

2 seperate FING issues! grapes please - the recall is about thermal damaged caused byt= the car being idled at high rpm allowing for heat to build up under the car
the issue in vegas and texas etc is oil related carbon lock at engine failures in places it is hot. 2 seperate issues. got it? |
shazoom- where did you go? think thery'll let me see the tank?:)
|
Shazoom, have you ever flooded or held high RPMs while not moving?
|
I'm interested in seeing how my 8 checks out. The battery was dead I jumped it and had to let it idle for 20 minutes or so in 90+ degree heat last week. The center console was so hot I couldn't put on my sun glasses till they cooled off.

Ugh... It's been really challenging getting AutoWest Mazda Subaru in Roseville to do the right thing. Paraphrasing and simplifying the conversation... Me: I need the 3305G recall inspection redone. I watched the tech do the whole thing and he didn't do it according to Mazda's instructions. I repeat: Make sure your dealer does the job right! DO NOT allow them to cut corners at the expense of your safety, your car's safety, and your home's safety (if you park in a garage)! :rolleyes:Dealer: Yes he did. He inspected the grommets and there was no sign of damage. M: Yes, but the group 2 instructions call for more than that. D: No, they don't. The tech followed the instructions. M: I have the instructions right here. There are several components he needed to inspect. He didn't even raise the car. D: He didn't have to raise the car because he could see what he needed to see with the car on the ground. M: I need the inspection redone according to the instructions. D: We're not going to do the job twice. M: I'm not asking you to do the job twice. I'm asking you to do it correctly once! D: We did do it correctly once. M: Do you have the instructions? D: Not in front of me, no. M: Well I do -- would you like me to read them to you? Right here, on page 4 of the instructions: Check the following parts for heat damage: I watched him do the job from start to finish, and he did not inspect all of these items!• Neutral Switch Connector / Harness Cover (for MT vehicle only). • Rear O2 Sensor Connector / Harness Cover. • Parking Brake Cable bellows covers. • Plastic parking brake cable clip attaching the parking brake cables to the fuel tank metal insulator. • Urethane pads located in bottom of cup holder (may shrink in size). • Body grommets at the side of the rear frame, above the muffler. • Back up light switch connector / harness cover • Engine harness protector / cover D: OK, OK, OK -- see you tomorrow at 8 AM. Edit 8/5/2005: Actually, in their defense, they were following the procedures attached to my record in the Mazda system. See today's post for details. |

That scenario is precisely why I'm concerned about my new vehicle. although I drove it home with 36 miles on it, who knows what happened during those first 3 months and 36 miles! |

Zoom44: Having all my service work and recall work done at Royal Moore in Hillsboro. I didn't get to see the tank yet myself but I am going to ask to when I pick up the car. I'm assuming it's made of some type of plastic?... to be melting.
Blue 87: I have had no real problems with my 8 and it has about 9,400 miles on it. No flooding, ect., and I haven't held any high RPM's while stationary or any thing like that. I wasn't even having any problems I knew about when I took it in this morning for the recall. Was very surprised when the service manager told me my fuel tank was melted  I'm assuming this could have had catastrophic results if I hadn't taken the car in ????? |

Hopefully you are one of the very few unlucky ones who have to have their tanks replaced. |

So have any dealers gotten group 1 parts yet? My dealer says it wont be until the end of the month. I am going to be moving from Atlanta to Boston at the end of the month and would rather not drive my car 1200 miles and find a new dealer if my local dealer here has or will be getting the parts soon
|
Just drove my 05 Shinka (4300 miles) back from getting the Group 1 recall procedure done.
In case you don't want to refer to my previous post: I didn't wait for a notice from Mazda. I called and talked to my dealer service rep at Russell Mazda in Clearwater Fl. on Tuesday and he set me up an appointment for today. They only had 1 of the thermal shield kits left in stock. They used the rest of their first order from Mazda to rework the cars on their lot (understandable). I was the first one to bring an RX8 in for the recall procedure. Brian (excellent service rep) never questioned my motives, or tried to get me to wait for the official notice from Mazda. I didn't notice any difference with the 'R' flash. Traffic was pretty heavy and I didn't get a chance to really test it out yet. Brian told me that they did not see any heat related damage. The procedure, along with an oil change was done in about 3 hours. They provided me with a free rental car as well. They even did a quick detail job on my Shinka before I picked it up. If other dealers are as great as Russell Mazda, this should not cause anyone any grief. |
You know, I can think of one other scenario besides flooded engines that might fall prey to this heatsoak problem--when you dyno the car. Especially if you are trying to tune a turbo.

i would assume you have a big fan going yes?
|
Define "big fan". Most shops I've seen use blowers aimed directly at the radiator that barely keep it cool. I doubt any of that airflow actually goes past the exhaust pipe.

Has anyone received their letters from Mazda NA yet?

Hey.. It's been 3 days since that was last posted.. :) It could be possible that someone has gotten it.... how about this. The first person that does receive it report back here, otherwise, please do not indicate that you have not received it yet...
Better? I have a feeling you like things neat and orderly :) You do a lot for this forum and it is appreciated. |
