Rough idle and surging

Hi my 2007 RX8 manual has developed rough idling and slight surging when cruising. Idles down to 700rpm and goes up to 1000rpm consistently when warm. Swapped MAF from my other RX8 and cleaned but no difference. Still redlines as per normal and no power loss. What to check ? Cheers
I did drop o2 sensor on weekend changing midpipe has no cat
42000 miles new plugs coils leads etc

Anyone ? It's mainly the surging I'm worried about. Slight hesitation when taking off as well.

Hello

Hello, I'm having almost the same problem but I noticed that it s doing that when is lower than 7- 8 Celsius outside.
I have an 2008 High Power RX8 with 105000 km ( I m from Greece )..
The needle doesn't stay on a position.
I got a new battery and now it has only 1000 km
Metallic catalytic converter with 500 cel and 20000 km on
and the coils and plugs have 31000 km..( I plan to replace them )
The car starts very quick when is cold or hot.
No CEL no problem when redline, everything is really good.
I read in UK rx8 club that is normal.
What do you think?

Neutral switch defective ...probably ... But that should also bring up a CEL ?

Coils and spark plugs changed. But I have the same issue.
Neutral Switch is ok..
The Mazda dealer told me that is the catalyst..
Is that possible?
PS : I have CEL with P0420 Cataclyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1) ( I have metallic catalytic converter with 500 cpsi )

I don't think idle surging is directly related to the catalytic converter, but I'd check the catalytic converter out for sure. A clogged one can end up damaging the engine as you drive it.

I have heard that the cold idle for RX-8 can be a bit funky if it's really cold out. I personally cannot verify that, though.

Did you check my video that I posted before? To tell me if that's what do you mean?
I'm asking you because we don't have mechanicals that they have the knowledge on rotary here in Greece. And I don't want to charge me for a new catalytic converter..

Yeah, my car doesn't do that when cold.

But a damaged catalytic converter can do even more damage.

Any competent mechanic can take off a car(rotary or piston) exhaust and see if the catalytic converter is fine, clogged or missing.

Could be your throttle sticking . If you pull it out and give it a good clean , especially the areas close to the shaft each side . See if that helps.

Idk what to do!

Ok. So I had my automatic transmission replaced in my 2005 rx8 and it ran fine for about one day then as I was driving into town, only been driving it for about 15 minutes and I'm sitting at a stop light and once it turned green, I went to hit the gas and all of the sudden, like a flick of a switch, it started misfiring, had absolutely no response from the gas pedal and it just basically idled extremely rough as I rolled it to the side of the road then it died. It will start still but it struggles immensely to start and can barely keep itself running. In park I can floor it and the rpms will go up but very slowly and misfiring and backfiring the whole time to but will die if I let go of the gas. If I put it in drive or reverse, it will idle roughly but the gas pedal does literally nothing. Not even the slightest change in rpms. And it seems like its flooding itself to with all the backfiring and very strong smell of gasoline when its starting and started. I have brand new spark plugs, coils, and wires. A new crankshaft position sensor and I've had it reset with a computer by my mechanic multiple times. It's also had the catalytic converter deleted. I keep getting misfire codes obviously but no other codes. Somebody please help me. Also when the transmission went out, it sat for around a month while we waited for the new one to be delivered. Before the transmission went out, I had no issues with the car, it ran great. Then when we got the new transmission in, it took about 2 hours to finally get it started and it was running real rough for about 5 minutes then it smoothed out and like I said previously, it ran fine for about one day.

Need HELP

Guys and Gals I need help. I bought my wife a 2004 RX 8 Automatic last August. This is her daily driver and honestly everything ran great. When we bought the car it had a new engine put in and like I said everything was good. About 3 weeks ago it popped the front 02 sensor. Took a couple days for me to get to it and apparently that was to long. She drove it to school, about 45 min away, and on her way home it ran horribly. She told me wouldnt idle, quick puff smoke out the back, one backfire and died. I met her on the side of the road and cleared code and it fired right up. Ran fine all the way home. The next day I changed 02 sensor and checked exhaust for plugged CAT. Cat was good. Started it up and ran good until warmed up. Then rough idle and dies. I have replaced 02 sensor, coolant sensor, coils, plugs, MAF sensor, checked for vacuum leaks, and frankly I dont know where else to go. If this was a normal motor I would have it running by now but I am new to rotary.
Yesterday I had the battery and alternator checked and they are good. Took it for a 45 min drive and ran great. Pulled up to house, put in park and idled for a minute then died. Throws a couple codes.P2096, P0410, and couple others I dont remember right now. It had the secondary air pump deleted when we bought it. Any ideas?

2096 means system too lean so that could be a clue . Check if it actually is lean or not ...should be 14.7ish at idle when hot .
If it is check what fuel trims are doing to try correct it .

Brettus,
I have had both rich and lean codes thrown at same time. The codes last time were:
P2096
P0172
P0410
I think I have replaced everything that would cause these but I'm not 100% sure. Could a fuel pump cause these codes? I have done both resets, idle and computer.

prattej ... if you can read the codes you shuld also be able read the parameters ? check LTFT,STFT and AFR and let us know what those are at idle. P0410 is just for the air pump .
