rough sounding engine

I have an 05 rx8.

When I reach 4500rpm and more, I get a very rough sounding noise from the engine. I guess the best way to describe it would be a rough throaty crackerly noise!!
The noise has only just arrived.
i change the oil every 5k, plugs were done about 12k, I have a K&N that has been in for 1 year.

If the car is in park and is put to 4000rpm +, no noise. Infact it won't make the noise in 1st either.

Any ideas, PLEASE....

Please give us some more info... How many miles? Have you changed coils? What grade gas are you using reg or prem? Have you checked your cat? What service has the car had? M/T or A/T?

in SC? maybe bubba or cooter can help you just make a left at the gas station, then by the tree with the shoes in it turn right. about 3 miles down the road you will see a rusted sign...

try the forums for that region down at the bottom of the main list.

It's only been a week since I had the front bearing, clutch, and pressure plate replaced. Of course, it was flooded (only second time since April) when I picked it up. I de-flooded the 8 and didn't have a CEL. But yesterday, it was so hot that I had the AC on full blast. The engine idled rough and there was a loss of power during acceleration. It was at about 60 miles of driving when I noticed a "marbles-in-a-can" noise on third (and higher gears) at 4.5k+ RPMs.

CEL flashed then stayed on since that symptom appeared. Drove it again today without AC and it drove fine with the CEL on; however, once I turned the AC again the engine stalled on an uphill post 15 min of driving. De-flooded (third time since I owned the 8) it and the same symptoms came back...

I'm in the process of changing the plugs, wires, and coils. I don't know what cause the engine to act this way; I've read most of the threads that is related to have this kind of problem. I am the second owner and I've put 41k+ miles since June '09.

maybe the diode from the ac isnt keeping the power surges in check...

I am having the exact same issue. Keep me posted what you find. The dealer wants to replace the motor, but that's not a possibility for me. I'll salvage the car before I go that route.

All is well until I turn the AC "on". The symptoms show up after 20 - 30 minutes of freeway driving. I'd have to wait until this heat-surge in Los Angeles dies down before I can tinker under the hood again.

Its probably either going to be the one of two things is all I can think of. The diode that keeps the electrical surges that the ac motor creates isn't working right. Or the condenser is seized up.

Probably the diode, the AC still blows cold.
