RX-8 4206F Recall: Completed - Feedback

Last Report
Well picked up my RX8 last night and have put about 40 miles on it. It seems better with improved power. I'll keep an eye on the gas milage to see if it goes back up to my typical 17-18 mpg.

Ever since the recall, my car has been harder to start. It cranks much longer than before, and it is now making a 'chirping' sound when the engine finally catches. Attached is a zip file containing an mp3 clip that my sone recorded with his MP3 player. Location was under the hood by the driver's side. Does anyone know what this is? I don't think it's a belt - they are all properly tensioned.

I have the exact same thing going with mine since the reflash. I thought it may have been due to the cold weather but it seems I may be incorrect on that. I did have some high rpm misfiring at one point but I still need to get back to the dealer on that.

sounds normal... the new flash seems to spin the motor longer before adding fuel and spark...
my guess is to clear the chambers, to help prevent flooding.

Realized I havent posted my experince yet with the recall in this thread.
Mine is a 9/03 build date Rx-8 A/T. Recall aparently and according to the dealer went fine and I passed with flying colors. this was back in the end of October.
Sadly since the recall I had my CAT fail so yeah wheee. Going to be brining my car to another dealer soon and ask them to possibly check my engine since the other dealer tested my CAT and it failed 2 weeks later.
Has anyone else had their CATs fail after the recall? According to my service tech he told me my CAT was clogged up nice and tight.
Any PM's would be nice with advice/info

After having to remove all "mods" i finally got the flash and the recall check. It took me a little while to get it back together again. The only two differences that I have noticed are that it seems a little harder to start (takes a little longer) and it seems to idle a little smoother. I have not yet seen an increase in oil consumption. They did change two of the plugs but when I asked them which two plugs I got a blank look. Now tomorrow I am going to have the Interceptor X installed.

I think smooth running is far more important than overall power, especially for those of us who plan on retuning/reflashing or installing stand-alone EMSs. Once we have a well running engine that pulls smoothly all across the rpm band it is much easier to perform subsequent tweaks and tuning. Didn't the "S" flash also include the longer crank time to prevent flooding issues and, if it did, wouldn't Mazda be prone to keeping it that way with the latest flash as well?

Completed the recall on my 04 MT last Friday (56 K miles), passed on the recall checks, reflashed the PCM. Details on the NE Forum recall thread. I had not experienced any power loss issues and had recently replaced leading and trailing plugs myself. Best advice is to know what the recall says and check your local forum for owner recommendations on best dealership service departments.

Report on 4206F Recall
Had recall performed on my 05 MT when I went in for 30k check-up in November. I had not gotten the recall letter but the dealer said a recall needed to be done when I dropped it off. I got the reflash and new plugsplugs. They said the battery, cat and engine passed. As the dealer usually washes cars after a service visit and they damaged my bumper (and had to replace and repaint it) after washing it a year ago, I asked them not to wash my 8. They did not fill the gas tank and would not give me the results of the cat and engine test when I called back later to get the data. Have noticed longer, harder starting and increased use of oil. Gas mileage seems a little off too, down to 17 mpg from 19 mpg. It seemed to hesitate in early acceleration but that has disappeared.

Just got ours done... Passed all tests, only replaced the two leading plugs and did the re-flash. I did a before and after with my Can Scan and can see no discernible difference in idle speed or AF ratio on the computer. I think there are a few guys out there with overly sensitive butt dynos.
Dealer gave me a Mazda6 loaner, filed my tank and washed the car, they offered a free full detail but I hate it when the slime up the inside of the car so I only took the exterior wash.
I also had them fix the heater while it was in, when they could not get the heater valve in that day they let me keep the loaner while they ordered and installed the part.
I was very happy with how everything went.

recall flash
Recall flash completed with no other faults. Since then, have used 6 tanks of fuel and have noticed mileage reduction of 2-3 miles per gallon and the same CHIRP on starting the car. Before then, had better mileage and no other issues since my many warranty claims the year before. 2005 red GT

Finally...
Mine finally went in for the recall today and it's all done. My wife took it there and drove it home, so all I can say is that it obviously passed and there's nothing that I know of that got replaced.
I will be listening to that sound upon start-up and I will be continuing to monitor my mpg. Any other info which is recall related will be shared...
Oh yeah, I got the gas and wash.

Extraordinary Engineering
Just got mine done. Or should I say that the dealer just did it while I was in for 48000km service. Leading plugs changed, ECU update, full tank, wash and interior vacuum.
I already had the ECU update done earlier when I got a CEL for a gas cap leak so I don't really expect to see any difference.

Hard starting post 4206f RECALL?!?!
Finally got my 4206f RECALL done a couple of weeks a go. I've haven't put many miles on it yet due to biz travel.
I saw a couple of people commenting in this thread on hard starting post-recall. I'm experiencing hard cold starts. It sound different at cold start - like the battery is weak (battery seems OK) and it seems relunctant to start. Eventually, it always starts. Doesn't give me much confidence, though.
Anyone else seeing this? Is this now the norm for starting due to some anti-flooding tactics (e.g: delay of fuel injection at start) that have been added to the ECM?
Has anyone taken their car back to shop and gotten a satisfactory explanation?
Just curious.
Miine goes back in next week to have the AC compressor and AC clutch replaced (to get rid of that annoying growling sound when the AC cycles). I'll ask the service flks then. We'll see.

I had my work done a few weeks ago. The car has not run the same since. I didn't have to have any thing replaced with the exception of plugs and wires. They told me that my wires were coroded so they replaced them. I got the run around on the car wash. The service guy acted surprised when I told him that the car was dirty. He told me to come back on the next day which was Saturday and they would get it done. I did but I was told the cleaning guy was not in and they would call but they never did. I took it back that next week because they had to order the wires and they put them in and washed the car even if it didn't need it then because I had done it. I never did get my gas from them even if it was listed on the work sheet. They are getting over on Mazda. The car is harder to start now. I used to just turn the key and if would fire up. Now it takes longer. The pick up is not like it was before either. Its kind of like I have a turbo as it takes a moment before the power kicks in. Used to be very smooth. The engine seems louder too. And yes...the gas milage is even worse since the recall work! I don't know.....
