UK RX-8 Sounds like a diesel

Hi all,
I recently had an upgraded starter motor fitted to my 04 plate RX8.
The car was flooded during the process but we managed to get it started. On driving the car home - 3 miles or so - there was a loud bang and the car now sounds like a diesel. No noticible vibrations as I can see. When you rev the car, it sounds ten times worse.

Anyone got any ideas as I am stuck?

Thanks
Paul

Hi all,

'Sounds like a diesel' is a worryingly familiar phrase.

Pcowburn: does yours sound like this?

I've uploaded the video in hope that someone has anything useful beyond what I've been told by an official Mazda garage - 'it needs a new engine'.

There are no fault codes and it passed the compression check. They were reluctant to do anything further given their diagnosis though!

It doesn't get significantly worse when I rev it, but the noise is in time with the revs (at higher revs the engine note is louder than this rumbling noise).

I have only had it a couple of months, and it certainly hasn't run low on oil in my ownership, I keep it topped up.

I've done a couple of motorway drives with it and having had the oil light come on and clear, with high oil level (3/4) wonder if it may need the oil pan tsb 01-013/04, (it's an '03).

Cheers,

David

Oh yeah...............this has happened before.
Do some searches as I cannot for the life of me remember what it turned out to be. It very well could be the SSV actuator.
If I find any threads, I'll link them back here.

Thank you for your posts so far.
I have been doing some reading, is it at all possible the spark plugs are at fault.

I had a garage looking at the 8 yesterday to fit an upgrade starter motor (hot start issues)

Check the ignition components and the ssv.
Fitting an upgrade starter motor for hot starting issues is almost useless... you still need a new engine.

I'm reminiscing about my first engine engine replacement 7 yrs ago. Hot starting issues, Mazda replacing my starter first and still no joy. Yes, those were the days.

Yeah, but when I looked at your plug wires, they appeared to be in good shape. There have been instances where the plug wires were loose or frayed and arching to the engine block created this sort of sound, but it was more of a ticking that what yours indicates. Oh................it does look like they are lating on the engine(the plug wires) get them off of there just for the heck of it.
So......you've been having warm start issues as well.................hmmmmm.......not good.
