The majority of the engine failures occured when the outside temp was between 112-118 here in Vegas. We had a run of about 2-3 weeks where it was DAMN hot EVERY day.
Once the temp went below 110 (and closer to 102-103) the failures stopped.
My guess is that next summer we will have a fresh batch blown / melted engines.
The car is great but the engine seems to have very little tolerance for high temps.
Time will tell.

EPA does not concern itself with how long your car lasts or what is best..only that they meet their goals and limitations. The bottom dollar. ,, at what cost do they know what is best? I'm all for helping the environment but when you have an engine failure WAY TOO EARLY..then you end up using another car while yours is tore down, leaking possible more oils and fluids especially if the car blew on the road. Ok I do admit they are limiting the zinc and phosphorus content in motor oils that are believed to cause Catalytic converter failures....however we come back to the engine failures again....since it is the zinc and phosphorus that protects against metal to metal contact.
They are saving the catalytic converters but as the cost of your engine, transmission and your wallet. I would rather replace a catalytic converter than an engine..how about you? couple hundred bucks versus a few thousand at the least for an engine.
If Mazda had programmed the Rx8 to run cooler simply by turning on the cooling fans at lower temps in the 180's or 190's instead of the factory 207 and 217(pretty sure I am correct) than you wouldn't see as many problems. hot weather climates plus the high TURN-ON temps for the coolings fans=a VERY nasty combo.... I would much rather have a belt driven fan that simply speeds up with more gas you give the car.. it's called SIMPLICITY..(trucks still use this method/hmmmmm) But in our times..it seems everyones' job to make things more and more complicated until we have all these "unexplained and weird problems".
Same thing with sulfur the diesel fuels..they took so much of the sulfur(lubricant) out of the diesel fuel..they have had an enormous amount of engine failures of truck engines failures.. They just recently started offering diesel fuel with more sulfur for those who prefer it or require it in their engines because of the large number of truck engine that are blowing.. The EPA is trying to save our environment..but at the cost of ruining our cars....THUS undoing any good they may have done because now you have a vehicle down which may or may not be leaking fluids onto the ground,,,..and then you have use ANOTHER vehicle in the meantime,,, and yet another one to come tow yours off. Now instead of just YOUR car/truck being on the road working, there are 3 vehicles in the picture.
Here we go back to the basics again..the almightly dollar, NOT what's best for you or I, Mazda or the cars...

I have the same problem with my RX8 the loss of power / loss of compression / rattle-grinding sounds / car dying at stop light. Right now its in the dealer they told me they are going to put a new engine, I have to wait 1 week. I dont think is the temperture because over here in Wichita Ks its kind of cold and The day before i had the engine problem i took it to the dealer for a clutch inspection, they told me everything was GOOD in my car they even gave me the results of the test on my car.I will let you know what happends with my car.

I just bought a 2004 automatic rx8 with 52k miles on it. I've had the car almost a month now and I just started hearing that same noise. The rattling is really loud when I first start up the car then when I drive it the noise fades out with only a light clicking sound. I check my oil and other fluids every week and I live in miami so the temp never exceeds 95degrees. My car isn't overheating so could it be that somethings just loose inside the engine?

Well, have a 2004, have been hearing some kind of rattling sound and what sounds like pinging/misfiring. After 10 visits in the past 2 months, they replaced the MAF, plugs, fuel damper all fuel injection seals and ignition coils and absolutely no change to the sound I was getting. They now tell me they are replacing my engine and it should arrive from Japan on June 18th and then they'll need it for another week after that. Have a rental at this time until I hear from them. All of this was covered under the extended comprehensive warranty. After I asked what they will actually change, they said "The complete engine assembly"...Not sur what that will include or not, but do I get new plugs, wires, airconditioner, intake manifold etc..?

If you do want to replace those things though, now is a good time to do it, as they often won't charge labor for it since they're bolting those things back on anyway

I've read different experiences from different people. But I think "officially," you don't get the stuff that would bolt on. You just get the "core" rotary (someone correct me if I'm wrong?).

When I had my OEM motor replaced, I was getting up near the 60K mile mark on the clock, so I had the clutch and throwout bearing replaced along with dropping in the reman motor.

I have a quesiton/comment. I'm on my 5th rotary engine..4 rx7's and this rx8. I have about 100k miles on my 8 now and I hear like a "whisping" sound. normally I can hear the spark plugs firing and such but now this whisping sounds like the engine is almost like whipsing oil, sorta like whipping cream in a bowl or something. It's tied to engine RPM.. Does anyone else ever hear this? I just recently started. No lack of power, use mazda maniac calibration, runs about 190 degrees all the time. No other issues. I have never heard this noise from another rotary engine. It sounds like someone talking with a lispe lol..but when it's hot out you can hear it much more.
Could it be spark plugs wore out? or maybe just a noisy pully? it seems to be coming from the bottom of the engine from the sounds of it.
Please contact me with with any help if you have heard this noise!
Thanks!!!

Humorously enough, I swore off Toyota for the same reason. Corolla's engine blew, took 2 months replacing it under warranty, only to have the transmission fry due to the techs leaving it drained of fluid and/or seals in the wrong spot, and the various arms of Toyota just sat there pointing fingers at each other.
Sounds like you either had a monkey doing the install and he did something stupid or you got one of the occasional bad reman motors, and should be entirely covered, no expense at all, and yes, they should give you a rental for this.

Blown Engine??
My 06' Shinka just hit 70,500 miles and i (knock on wood) have yet to have any problems with my engine. Now, don't get me wrong, I hot rod my car every now and then so... i have a general idea that this may be why but however, 13,000 miles is rediculous and for the dealership to tell you that it is bad... im starting to think that they are trying to get some money out of you.
