And members not trying to solve their own problems, without the slightest effort to troubleshoot themselves makes me mad

why risk it?

This is a prime example of why the rx8 has such a bad reputation

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
If it's broke, fix it.

Re-click that link I posted in post #2. Use key words such as "fix" "replace" "test" ssv. Or would you like me to google that for you, as well?

If I were to tell you that I'm sick, and I'm experiencing a dull ache in my head, how would you respond to that?

The point is- your car is telling you that there is a problem. I can't see your car. And neither can anyone else on these forums. If I were to tell you to replace it, would you blindly spend all that money?

This is why you should do your own research. I gave you the tools. Now you need to do your troubleshooting. After you've looked up what you believe to be the problem and still experiencing issues, then report back with all available info, including what you have done.

See how this works?

Just found this by accident and it really made a difference in the search results. forgive me cutting it down to fit here, but I think it needs to get out there more.

The best way to search this forum:

We have a Search button, and a Search function for the board, but it isn't very good. It removes words that it sees as common or too short, but are a critical part of the search. It doesn't allow for search by relevancy, as in real relevancy. You mostly have to do alot of hunting and pecking in the search results to come up with what you might be looking for.

Add the two above issues together, and you can easily take all day to find only bad information.
But I have good news! You can improve your results and search speed by up to 15% by switching to Google!

As in Google.com.

Go to Google.com, and in the search box, type: site:rx8club.com
Then a space.
Then start typing what you are looking for.

Like this:
RX8Club.com search via Google
Your Google search results will be ONLY from this forum, and it will use all the power and intelligence of the best search engine in the world.

I probably shouldnt do this... But here is the diagnosis. Locations, diagrams & wiring can be found in many places if you search. Most likely its SSV but if people want to do the diagnosis or have replaced it and still have issues this will hopefully help!

1. Key Off, Disconnect SSV connector, check connections (such as damaged/pulled-out pins, corrosion) - No? Go to next step
2. Ignition On, Check SSV Pin A for Open or Short to Ground - measure the voltage between SSV Pin A (wiring harness-side) & ground. Is there battery voltage? If No, go to next step
3. Ignition Off, Check SSV Pin B for short to ground - Inspect for continuity between SSV Pin B (wiring harness-side) & ground. Is there continuity? If No, go to next step
4. Key Off, Remove SSV, Inspect SSV Airflow - If no issue go to next step.
5. Key Off, Check SSV Wiring for Open circuit - If good go to next step
- SSV Pin B (harness-side) and PCM Pin 1L
- SSV Pin A (harness-side) and main relay Pin C
6. Key Off, Check PCM connections (such as damaged/pulled-out pins, corrosion) - if good go to next step

If you fail step 1, 2, 3 or 6 - fix wiring issue.
If you fail step 4 or 5 - replace SSV
If no issues are found - clear code, if same code is present or pending again after clearing replace PCM.

CO p0661

I have researched til im purple in the face. I hope someone can help. Ive replaced plugs, coils, harness, ssv valve, egr selionoid vacum control switch. the only thing im coming up with is that is electrical and i wonder if anyone else has had this issue (duh) but any help would do. I am really bad with finding out if current going thru harness wires. but do you think that would be my last option. if i had to id go buy one but not sure type and where to stick it...i could watch a video...but i looked up sckematics and videos...didnt wanna bother here...but hey thats what we are all here for ..the love of this car.

It's definitely electrical. You replaced the SSV but did you replace the SSV solenoid? I would check that first. There's a bank of solenoids for the intake valves, not a bad idea to replace them all.
If you want to validate, you can swap the SSV solenoid with one of the others and see if the problem travels with the solenoid ( a different code will come up).

EGR solenoid? This car doesn't have EGR.

LOKI...oh my gosh thank you..what i did was transfer the power to one of the other selinoids and the pcm recognizes it...so wow....this is good...My car doesnt have an EGR? well that was the one of the 3 behind tha upper manifold. oh heck no did i end up buying the wrong solenoid... I replaced a EGR solonoid valve vacume control switch vsv for mazda....ohhhhhhhhh for the love of MADONNA....I put in the wrong part its for ....no wait it says its for rx8 626 protege k10118741, it looks like the one i replaced it with....it doesnt move like it stays closed or open...and it seems as i was researching that there could be a vacum leak....aiy yai yai...

Loki please dont laugh i this car is so cool and i always wanted one. unfortunatly in colorado it seemed hard to find one that drove and the one i have is an AUTOMATIC> saying that get this. I just realized I dont have an air pump, a check control a canister....it goes on...like the whole frigan EVAP system has been removed. and the pipe that the control check switch sits upon is closed with a steel cover.....OMG....
again please forgive me....i have not been into a car since i was 16-18 after that i never touched or thought i would be into it like i am now....But agian sorry with with excuses....but shut see the problem i was having was it would start but idle funky and then die at light. i have been taking it to a mechanic to get diagnosis and then i have been trying to do it myself....but they (ive been to 3 as once i research and repair the parts it still doesnt correct issue) but I do pay like 280.00 last visit for these diagnostices,...so i cant see me spending 1000 labor when i enjoy trying to do it myself.. I have taken it to other mechanics as i tell them what was replace...but they come up with something else....But I just realized as i was changing the selinoids as you pointed out I thought hmmm why is there so much space in the left part of my bay.....I HAVE NOT EVAP system....shut....i then looked under the car to see if i could see a conversion of the pipe...but it still looks like the cat is in place .....I wouldnt mind not having this for now if the car was just realiable and not die....but then again im aware i have to take care of the evap or i wont get a A+ on my emmissions test....now im so confused on what i should do.....more research...it anyone has the patience and has read all of this ....HELP haha LOKI mahalo you gave some good advice there....maybe cause i was being cheap i got a bad selinoid

I guess what you're calling EGR is the air pump. If you still have a cat, removing the air pump is a pretty bad idea. But, its not technically part of the evap system, so you should be ok on that. Unless evap was also removed?

Anyway, you can probably also stop taking it to mechanics who don't have experience with rotaries and rx8s. I don't know if there's a rotary specialist in Colorado, but try to find one.
As for rough idle and stalling, what intake do you have on there? Can you post pictures of the engine bay? Could be a vacuum leak yep.
Has the car had a compression test before you bought it or in the diagnostics since then?

The basics you need are at rx8help.com, have a read there. These aren't difficult cars to maintain but you need to be informed.
