NM RX8 making rumbling/poping noise after 4500RPM

My 2005 RX8 is making a really loud rumbling and popping sound when the car hits exactly 4500 RPM. For me it sounds like it is the intake. I have put on a K&N Typhoon Intake System (website for the intake is http://www.autoanything.com/air-inta....aspx?kc=ffsku ). When i first put the intake on it did not make the noise. It started half way when i went on a long trip from Seattle WA to New mexico. The noise is really loud and ugly with the intake. Another thing is it only make the sound when it is in gear. When revving it in neutral its sounds real nice and does not have the rumbling and popping sound. Will try and post a recording of the sound on here asap. Thank you.

I had a possibly similar experience a couple summers ago on a trip from L.A. to Tahoe, although it only really affected my car at high altitude (above about 7500 ft) in the passes.

Has this cleared up any after resting the engine for a bit? I ended up figuring it was mostly an overheating-related issue, athough I also had some issues with misfiring (I now think that had to do with an unhooked plug wire that I didn't know about for a long time) in the 4500-5800 rpm range. Some of that noise might also be attributable to blown motor mounts making the frame/body resonate (I had to get mine replaced after the trip where i really noticed a similar sound).

The intake would make any odd sounds more audible since it eliminates the resonator from the intake system (I had a 1st-generation Typhoon for a while before switching to the Rev-i), but I wouldn't think it'd cause any sort of trouble in that regard. The only issure I've really heard of attributed to the typhoons is a rough idle, but I never really noticed that on my own car.

I am having this exact issue. Can anybody shed any light on a definitive cause? I had overheating issues which have since been fixed but now I am getting this exact same noise.
