Similar Problems posted here, Can we drive it?
Son recently got 2004 RX-8 auto trans. Ran great, has died on him a couple of times on decel. Did same today, ck engine light flashed. Has not run right since. Has had to restart it several times. He drove it to a hair appointment and back to school for a volleyball game so I haven't actually listened to it. Says it sounds like air escaping if he revs it very much and has serious power loss in midrange. Question is, it going to hurt it to drive it home? About 5 miles, he's driven it probably 8 miles since the light flashed. Also, what kind of warranty does it have? Its under 50,000, is there a way to check warranty status online or have to wait to call dealership? Sorry no more info, we are kind of illiterate with cars anyhow, let alone this beast!!
I read the stickies, sounds like a compression test is in order. If it is gonna require a new engine he best get out his walking shoes!!
Any help will be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks in Advance!

Drive it to the dealership. It's under warranty, they should fix it.
Take notes on everything they say is wrong with it and then check out all the TSBs. A lot of places will do a TSB work-around to save a few bucks. If they pull that crap on you, print the TSB out, demand to speak to a manager, and ask them to explain in full why they didn't do the work Mazda ordered them to.
Make sure you get every kink that you can worked out before you hit the 60,000 mile mark. A healthy rotary is an immortal - demand nothing less.
