Slow Starting

I purchased an RX8 yesterday, I didn't notice this when I test drove it but ever since it's been something that's worrying me.

Whenever I go to start the car, it sounds as if it is struggling but so far has not failed to start. It always seems to take 4-5 turn overs before it starts and I'm not sure why this is.

I've taken a quick video to show what happens:

Should I be worried about this??

Thanks in advance!

You might need to replace the plugs, wires, and coils. The engine could be flooded as well.

Anyway, you just bought the car and you should have warranty on it. Let the dealership know about the issues of the car and you should bring it back to have them check it out. It should be free of charge if you have the warranty on it.

I didn't purchase it from a garage so no warranty unfortunately. It's a late 2003 registration. I've read online about the earlier RX8s coming with weaker starters and batteries than the newer ones. Could this be the issue??

Bingo!!
Just had mine replaced yesterday as was dragging similar to yours. Built 2003. 63k miles. You're looking at $450 via the Dealer unless you do it yourself. New one is significantly larger than the originals. You will be amazed how fast it starts with the newer version.

Mine never failed but would drag when hot especially. If it doesn't spin the rotors fast enough it can flood. Also there is a CPU flash via dealer for 3 second delay for fuel to avoid flooding.

Hope you plan on doing alot of reading off this website. These cars have alot of features to learn about.

Good luck.

It might be unrelated, but I'd also consider paying to have a compression test done before the rotary warranty expires...

Thanks for the replies!

I think I will get the more powerful starter fitted. Is it worth getting a more powerful battery too?

Also I didn't know about the extended warranty on the engine - did a quick google and it is 8 years/100k miles?? Does this still apply even if you're not the original owner? If so I will look into getting a compression test done.

First I would go to AutoZone and they will test the battery and starter for FREE.

Be warned it cost me $450 for Dealer installed starter. Not cheap. Others probably much cheaper or do it yourself if you have the tools and a garage.

I'm running only a 450CCA battery and it spins fast so don't change the battery if it tests good. Physical size of the battery must remain small for air circulation to cool it in the box.

The Engine Core warrantee (internals only) stays with the car for 04-08 models. It is for 8years from the time the car was first titled. Every owner is covered. I can never remember if it's 80 or 100k miles but you are well under the limit. Mine is up December of this year but I got a new rebuilt core at 55k miles so not a big deal anymore. They exchange them like rebuilt starters. If Mazda doesn't have one on the shelf you will have to wait a few weeks until they get one to exchange. Usually you can continue driving the car. I don't think anyone gets their original back but who cares? It doesn't include even spark plugs or cleaning intake so that is all extra on you!!

Anyhow there is an 800 number you can call and ask if your engine has ever been redone yet and when your warrantee is up.
