smallest wheel size for snow tires
#4
05 MT stock 18" wheels. I just moved to colorado from florida, and that should pretty much explain the ignorance to the snow. I figured it would be cheaper if i could go to a steel wheel for the winter but it's seeming to be a bit more difficult than i thought.

Most owners get a cheap 17"x7" alloy wheel with 215 55 17 or 225-50-17 snow tires. Many tire shops such as www.tirerack.com have packages.
18" snow tires cost much more than 17" and the wheels allow you to swap back and forth without spending money at a tire shop.

Going with 17" wheels for Winter snow tires also affords a taller sidewall which is advantageous. As DarkBrew cites, TireRack has some very reasonable wheel/snow tire packages.
Or - you may want to consider going to an All Season tire on your stock rims.
"...as for the best [All Season] traction i would recommend the following ....
225/45R18 Goodyear Eagle F1 AS -- 162.00

nycgps - why is it the smaller wheels would hurt the MT?
For the o/p -
I bought some 17 x 7 painted aluminum wheels (cheaper than I could find any used OEM wheels), and some Continental 215/55R17 snows from Tire Rack.
Definitely worth the $$. Last winter we had very little snow, and the stock tires scared the s**t outta me. This year we had the biggest accumulation in a single storm in 15 years - a little over 8" (this is St. Louis). I had absolutely no problem in that storm. If I were you, I'd go for a set of dedicated snows.
