My new engine arrived at the dealership yesterday. They have one in front of me to put in, then it's my turn.
33,000 miles and she still feels the same. Just overheats all the time if I'm not on the freeway cruising.
Oh well new engine FTW.

Hey, I am really new to these forums, and have been reading up on this engine failure. Is this a recall only for rx8's that are under warranty, or within a certain mileage?

This is not a recall from Mazda on the engine. It is due to an issue that they had early on with the RX-8. It was related to some people not revving the engine high enough. Thus causing carbon build up on the Side and Apex seals, causing them to stick and not seal properly. Causing a low compression issue. Resulting in a loss of power.
There also was an oil metering problem that had to do with insufficient oil injection at lower RPM's. Also resulting in premature seal failure (wear).
Mazda did a "Recall" to reprogram the computer to inject more oil at lower RPM's. In reality lubricating the Apex and Side seals better. And to test the rotor seals.
Mazda did replace engines that failed these test procedures.
Some peoples engines might have passed the testing that Mazda did to determine if they needed a new engine. At that time. And now they might have worn enough to cause an issue at current mileage. Due to wear incurred prior to the testing by Mazda.
Mazda did come forward and solve the issue. But some people are now having issues. possibly due to premature wear internally.
I for one have an overheating issue. Also a slight lack of power at about 6500 RPM.
This is something that Mazda is addressing.
But there is NOT an engine recall.

Dropped the car off Thursday to have the engine put in.
Well the new engine is in and the Dealership calls me.

So I pick the car up on Saturday. Cool. "
Service Dept. says "Nothing above 4000 rpm for the first 600 miles" Murmurs something about legalities. J/K

So I'm off.
385 SLOW miles later I'm back at the dealership (Berge Mazda). I tell them the car has a lope at idle. Bad vibration. No loss of power ( Kinda hard to tell driving an RX-8 limited to 4000 rpm). No CEL.
They check the car with the quickness. Gotta love this dealership (Berge Mazda).
So I go get a rental car, Come back to the dealership. Pick a few things up from the 8, and Micki up from the waiting room. Hit the road home. Half way home the dealership called and said they just ran a compression test.
So it seems to have lost compression on #1 rotor, on one side. 79 psi.
So I figure she had a side seal stick, break?

So there she is again. Two days after a heart transplant and I'm waiting on a donor again.

Three more weeks!!!

I want everyone to know that Berge Mazda is the BEST dealership. They have gone above and beyond the call of duty. Customer satisfaction is #1.

Question Please help! This is pretty disturbing

The emissions recall covers a few parts in order to get the car to comply with federal emissions guidelines, which may include: new starter, new coils, new spark plugs, new catalytic converter, new engine control programming, and also new/reman engine depending on what tests you fail, and what you tell mazda.
Can you help me understand what the 'key words' might be? I had my emissions recall a couple of months ago, around 35K (I would have to check to see exactly) and then yesterday my CEL came on (around 37K). They say catalytic converter is shot, will cover under warranty. But I'm concerned that when they did the recall, they didn't do the tests you mention, and it may be a matter of time before I need a new engine. My coolant light comes on when I drive for long periods of time.......

Service manager mysteriously had mentioned being wary of apex seals going bad, just recently when I took it in to get a sun visor and the rotor trim in the back replaced. Out of the blue he just said how apex seals are the number one reason 8 engines go bad, but he blamed people being negligent of the oil level, which I never am.

What do I need to say to make sure those tests were perfomed?

much appreciated

Taylor

PS I'm pretty sure the only reason they're covering this under warranty is because I had the clutch pedal assembly bracket go out a few months ago, and after consulting this forum, haggled them into covering THAT under warranty (of course they said, only as good faith, and to 'retain my business in the future').

I just HATE the shady dealership interactions.

Per the documentation provided by MNAO to dealers for this campaign (4206f):
"Ask customer if they are currently experiencing a severe lack of power and low idle complaints, and / or have previously experienced a severe lack of power and low idle concern."

Of course most dealers are not asking, so you need to use "the magic words" such as "experiencing power loss", "low idle", or if the motor is really shot and you haven't flooded it, "the car won't start" to get the dealer to do the extended test.

ps - they should be documenting the results of the extended test for MNAO and you should get a copy of same on your service order. If they don't provide the information voluntarily, demand same and then go find a new dealer.

Abbid,
Glad to hear it's going well for you. I don't know that any new or rebuilt engine will have perfect compression out of the box. The seals need to break in an build it.
On a side note, not to bug you as I know you'll be doing me a HUGE favor, but if you have those tranny docs we pm'd about earlier it would be much appreciated. My time is coming to take it in and I'd like to be prepared.

Another Member of the Dead Engine Club

Hi everyone!

This will be my last post on this forum.
I became a member of the dead engine club last week.
I did everything suggested by RotaryGod and others.
I used Motorcraft and Royal Purple oil, changed it every 2500 mi.
I used synthetic premix and FP60 in the gas.
I had a Racing Beat radiator guard, and oil cooler guard.
I had two extra fans to help cooling.
My engine still died at 49,000 miles.

I now own another Miata, my third.
I will not own another rotary.

Best of luck to all of you.

Possible new member

I never thought I'd say this but I think I will be a new member of this club...drove the car today and had loss of power in the middle of the highway...i have a 2004 AT with almost 60K miles...

i brought it to the dealership a month and change ago and the staff stalled the car in the middle of the highway after they did the $60K maintenance...they said the car flooded on them...i dunno if this incident had anything to do with the one a month and change ago but I'm VERY concerned...

Question for you all, if it does turn out that they need to replace my engine, will they put in a brand new engine or a used "fixed" engine?...Can I force them to replace it with a brand new one?...

I go to Wayne Mazda in New Jersey and they are the largest Mazda dealership in the United States according to their sales team...

Any advice would surely be appreciated...Thanks..

Im not sure at this point in time, the standard procedure is to replace your motor with a reman. Although Mazda has had alot of issues with there reman motors comming from Williams Technologies, soo there could be a good chance you will get a brand new motor from japan. Your dealer should tell you what you will be receiving engine wise.

Hey!!!

SO I was getting on the free way the other day and the car misfired at 8k RPM and the CEL went on. I stopped by the nearest Checkers to run a dianostic and foun that the number 2 cylinder missfired. ( Funny case Rotory's don't have cylinders) Anyway the next day took it to the dealer and today I was notified that I need to have a NEW ENGINE put in so here I am in the club.

Well when they called all they said was that I was needing a new engine because the #1 Rotor wasn't holding compression and that it may not be under warranty because of the K&N intake on the car. That's a loude of crap. What does an intake have to do with a bad engine. Apparently everything when it comes to money.

I'm still waiting to her back If it's going to warrantied or not. If I make a strong argument and bring this thread and the poll in with me there's no denying that it's just the motor and the motor itself that is the problem and not that the intake caused it. (air is just air) Anyway I think I'm going to have a big fight in front of me to get it replaced under warranty. Let me know what you think.

2004 MT 24,000 Miles

They should Recall all the 2004 RX-8 Motors.

THEY have to PROVE that the intake caused the failue of the engine. Which is not going to happen.

I'll keep that in mind tomorrow when I speak with them again. What a shame though, only 24,000 miles. The upside is I'll have an 04 with 0 miles and hopefully a more powerfull, fully functioning, no compression loss, motor in there.

I want a 4 rotor.

More crap from the dealer today. I called to see if they heared anythinig about my warranty and they havn't heard anything. They're still waiting for the engineer's to call back. This one guy that works in service is soo stupid. He said that my intake voids the warranty and the motor most likely won't be replaced under warranty. I asked what does the intake have to do with the motor failing if 100's of 2004 8's have had motors replaced for the exact same thing. He said that the way I have the filter plumed down to the front of the bumper is restricting air from getting in.

Pure Bull ****. This guy pisses me off. He's new there and seems scared and doesn't know anything. The intake lets more air in than the tiny slits in the stock intake did. I'll post pics of the intake. That guy just pisses me off. Next time I call I'm going to ask for the service manager, He's a great guy.

If worse comes to worse I'm going to have to find 1000's of 8 owners to call,
e-mail, fax, and send letters to MAZDA and My dealership to replace the engine under warranty and any other 2004 that has the same issues with no questoins asked. It's obviously a 04 RX-8 issue that needs to be adressed and not covered up with stupid "emmisions" recalls and fony tests.

It's BS. If they give you any crap Call Mazda North America and explain to them the situation and what the dealer is telling you. There is no way an intake restriction would cause your motor to fail.

If that still causes them heartburn and they won't honor it take your car back, pull out the intake and put the stock one back in and take it to a different dealer.

Bottom line is you have a crappy dealer. Either way after this is over find a new one.
