since you've only got 500 miles on the engine, I'd head back to the dealersihp.
blinking = misfire which could be a bad coil, bad spark plug, or even ignition coils that aren't plugged in properly.

get it checked out just to be safe

So I'm thinking I'll be joining the new engine club soon. Changed my oil on Sat. then let the car sit for about a day and half. Went to start it to go to work and it will not turn over. Standard flooding issue right? Tried the de-flooding procedure and nothing.

Changed the plugs (they were pretty fouled up) but no dice still!!! Took the plugs back out and noticed that only one of them really had any residue from sparking fuel. Plus, I turned the engine over a few times with the plugs out and without my foot on the pedal to see if there was any fuel delivery. I noticed that only the rear rotor leading spark plug port had any fuel oil mix on it, the other three were practically dry.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Its probably flooded, if it is it doesnt mean u'll get a new engine.. Dealer will probably charge u like $500 to deflood the engine.. but get it checked

+1 it's flooded. Our engines will still turn over if they're bad. Not turning over means flooded 99% of the time.

One day on the interstate 10 I was cruising at 80 and put it in 4th and WOT and I heard this awful grinding noise and sounded so rough around 6k. But afterwards I started it back up I couldn't replicate it, 2,000 miles later its doing i alot more.

Trying to judge by each individual's written interpretation of sounds/noises they are hearing is tough. The most frequent reference to the audible sound from a failing rotary engine is something like "marbles in a can" or "marbles in a blender". Best way to know is to get a documented compression check on the motor (plenty of info on this via Search). Dealer shouldn't be rejecting warranty coverage of drive train on your 04 because of aftermarket plugs and wires UNLESS they can prove those parts caused the failure (Moss-Magnusson Act - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnuso..._Warranty_Act). It can make things a little sticky if the dealer wants to try and make an issue about it and you have to defend your situation. Depending on how you feel about your dealer and their service orientation to a customer, sometimes it is worth the investment to return to stock rather than deal with the BS.

I also hacked me SSV off my intake and plugged it, that shouldn't void warranty right?

I guess I'll be a member soon; brought mine in last week and got told the news. Hoping to have the new engine in sometime this next week. It's an '04 AT with over 68K miles. Here's a question regarding RX-8's with new engines: If I were to sell it, does the new engine make it worth more than Kelley Blue Book says? If so, by how much? Thanks!

In my case, the engine replacement turned off potential buyers, and the dealer used it as a justification for the poor trade-in value I was offered. Hopefully your experience is different, but I think the engine replacement only serves to scare most people.

I was afraid that might be the case. I guess I'll have to console myself by continuing to drive such a fun car, now with a new lease on life! After all, it is paid for...

Some times people's logic astounds me. the car has a new engine replaced under warranty by the manufacturer therefore it is less valuable than it would be if it had an engine with XXX original miles on it...

Because it is still the same engine design. No changes have been made. Carbon buildup is showing to be a problem.

Guess I'll be joining the club.
'04 MT 49k
Blinking CEL with P0300 and P0302 Lack of power and hard loud knock. Replaced Spark Plugs, Spark Plug Wires, and Ignition Coils. Didn't work. Took it to dealer today, said loss of compression in rotor 2 and they have to run more test...

Probably getting rebuit engine and hope they replace the plugs, wires, and coils so I can have the ones I paid for back.

Oh yea 2 cracked visors and water in both tail lights, they won't replace because Basic warranty exp. 50k/48months. and because basic warranty is out, they won't give me a loaner while I wait for engine.

Sorry to hear that man. I was afraid of more trouble down the road, so I regrettably decided it was best that I trade in my RX-8 late last year. The fact that I now have a son also played a role in the decision. I definitely miss the car, especially when I see other RX-8s on the road and in the parking lot at work...

i wonder how many of the failures listed are due to lack of seal lubrication.

ZoomRx8Boy
hopefully they will replace the coils/plugs. Pobayyly not. Ask them and see if they will..

mazda considers the coils/wires as consumable items. just like a spark plug or oil filter..

hey guys i gotta question for you, when your engine "failed" what was it acting like? because im getting ready to take mine in because im experiencing a big lack of power for a while. i have an '04 6spd with 62k miles and ive had this problem for a while. i changed all my plugs and coils, tested my new plugs and coils and im looking into new wires because i cant find the problem. i just got a brand new oem cat put on amd it still didnt fix the problem. and so im just looking for some input if you guys think my engine would fail that test

Replaced drivers visor which pulled apart on a hot AZ day and both rear tail lights because of water. Just before warranty expired. New tail lights have water too. Must be a design defect for both parts.

So how would you say it took for the dealer to replace engine?

Brought mine in mid June, now mid July and they say "still waiting for Mazda Tech hotline" The other day advisor told me, Mazda Corp Rep is in, they come in every month, so I'll get an answer for you. Never heard back from him. That was on the 16th. They lagging it bad, trying to screw me out of engine.

You need to get all your info, dates, names and numbers in front of you and call Mazda America (800 # in your manual). Get some real answers....

First off Hi to everyone, I'm new to the forum and to the RX8.

Zoom, I got the same story. Brought my car ('05 AT 28K) in for power loss and the coolant light staying on. Dealer said new engine was needed due to coolant being burned in engine. I got a call a day later from the service manger saying he needs oil change records in order to get the new motor.
I bought the car with 22k on it and only have a record of one oil change being done by another dealership (Great Neck Mazda in NY), they of course cannot locate the record of the oil change. so now I trying to figure some other way of proving the work.

Dealer also said that they will use the old plugs, and injectors.Did anyone else get the same story?
