It's not dangerous but you'll lose your top end performance above 7500 RPM when it's supposed to open up.

There are some DIY's on the site on how to test and swap this out. Do a search and you'll pick up the DIY.

For those of you who got "marbles in a can" did it make the sound in neutral or with the clutch pressed in??? I'm hoping that this is my problem because I am fearing the worst right now... Please reply to either post and input your suggestions... Will be greatly appreciated...

Here's my post... https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-trouble-shooting-95/i-think-ive-got-problems-please-help-202234/

update: Took my car to Mazda and I think i'm going to be in this club very soon, I should know by tomorrow... Original engine went 86k before this issue... so we will see shortly if its getting replaced but they guy there was saying that he is pretty defenate that it is the engine and will do everything he can to see that it gets replaced

I never thought I was going to be part of this club...but low and behold...here I am.

Unlike most of you though, my engine passed the compression test and still had strong numbers at 70k miles too.

Sorry for nit picking but
VDI opens at 7250
APV is 6250
SSV opens at 3250
All based on WOT

I agree with the other stuff you wrote

Question new engine

I had a little smoke at start up. so I took it to the dealer, who said its under warenty. I get a new engine & cat. They've had the car three weeks now. I got a call yesterday wanting me to pay for a new intake manifold because now the check engine codes reads injector problems. they told me the first week. there was a broken bolt in the intake where the valves turn for stage 2 & 3 injectors they were able 2 get the bolt out. so everything is ok. now they dont know what to do. but replace the whole intake! any ideas?

I would have to price it out, but the entire manifold replacement, especially included into an engine rebuild, might actually be cheaper than trying to fix what is wrong with from what you describe, and it would be a better fix. I would ask the dealer to walk through the pricing with you. If it is close in price, I would still go for the new intake manifold.

I am on my third. Premix the fuel and change the oil often. If you plan on keeping her for a while go with the SOHN adapter.

Just recently got my car back from my second reman install. The first lasted 20K, but I think was running hot the whole time. Eventually I started seeing the temp needle move and got the water pump and thermostat changed which fixed the problem. After that, though my cooling fans came on way less than they had been running for the last two years. The engine failure was due to a small coolant leak between the rotor housings. I'm thinking that was caused by overheating.

The first reman was installed by Ron Tonkin in Portland and it was a complete disaster! I was at the dealership every other day having them fix stuff they did wrong, including coolant leaks, broken parts, disconnected hoses, CELs, power steering failure, wrong weight gear oil so it felt like I was shifting through cement, and crossthreading bolts on both motor mounts so I'd get clunking noises when turning corners. Of course they claimed it was my suspension and I ended up spending a bundle troubleshooting the issue. After several months I kind of just gave up even though I knew there were other things that were wrong. Little noises and a sloppy feel to the steering and other things I knew they would just charge me a diagnostic fee and tell me they couldn't find anything.

When I found out that I needed another reman I decided to take it to a different dealership (Alan Webb in Vancouver, WA). I was still skeptical and was kind of expecting another huge nightmare. Much to my surprise, after 600 miles and two weeks of having the car back it runs great. I haven't had one issue at all and am very happy with the results. The car doesn't make any funny noises any more and the steering feels tighter and more precise. It hasn't felt this good since before Tonkin got ahold of it.

My plans for getting this engine to last longer: gauges. I want to know what's going on with my temps without having to rely on how often I hear my fan or seeing my OEM gauge move after it's way too hot and too late.

new engine

I just had the same thing happen to me. I bought a new manifold for $956.00 & they said they would replace it.

Hi,

I just got my Rx8 back today after they replaced the engine under warranty. Some hoses and bolts were also changed which i had to pay around $500 for.

When i went to get the car the air bag light was on (which was taken care of right away) and the check engine light was still on. Astonished at the fact that an engine replacement didn’t get the light to go off, i asked the service person to give me an explanation. He told me that the computer pulled a few codes and basically the light was on because of a shutter valve issue. He listed a few parts on my quote as a recommendation to change:

Shutter Valve
Gasket
Bolt
Cleaner

Parts including labor cost $700-800. He told me that this was nothing to do with the engine and hence couldn’t be covered under warranty. So I’ll need to get this work done in order for the light to go off. I asked him the urgency and repercussions of not doing it immediately, to which he responded “it isn’t very important and will not affect your engine so you can leave it for a while, however it needs to be taken care of.

My question is, does this really not seem like a big deal, and what exactly does the shutter valve do? What’s really the exact problem because the service guy wasn’t able to articulate the issue to well and was insisting that it is not a big deal?

I could really do with some advice from someone who actually knows what this problem is, because the engine light is really bothering me.

Apart from this the car is running really smooth and I’m loving the new engine.

Thanks for your help guys!

Nope. Mine went from Old engine to new one. Now they could do a vacuum check on them and see which ones are bad.

looks like I'll be joining the club at around 142,000 klm.
I'm waiting on the final word from Mazda today.
I've had the updated SSV valve installed and the cat was dropped and visually inspected; the cat looks fine and is easily passing all the minimum numbers from Mazda.
So once I get the go ahead I'm thinking I'll have some parts replaced at the same time:
1) OMP lines are probably a good bet.
2) thermostat.
3) motor mounts.
anything else you would suggest?
BTW, my dealership has informed me that the replacement engine will not cost me a penny.

If you can you might as well since they play an important role and replacing them with the engine out is super easy and will save you a ton of money if you are not doing the work yourself.

So it's official, the rear rotor is blown and Mazda has ordered me a replacement engine.
I don't if the following has happened to anyone but the tech was testing the cat all the way through the process and it was passing the tests including a visual inspection to see if it was clogged.
After the seafoam cleaning the rear rotor completely gave in and was showing little to no compression; however, the cleaning completely fried the cat and made it useless.
The dealership informed me that the cost of a new replacement cat will also be covered and not cost me a cent.
I was told before the testing that the cat was out of warranty and a new one would cost me full pop.
I'm very pleased to hear that Mazda is covering the cost of a replacement and admitting that the seafoam cleaning they performed was the cause of the cat failure.

I am very angry. My 2004 A/T RX8 was taken to Mazda 2 and a half weeks ago. My car was due to be finished "tomorrow" since Monday. It is now Saturday, come to find out my Coils and engine mounts need to be replaced for around $500. Fine I said I want it done right. They said it would be done tonight. At around 5:00 PM after a long days work I check my phone. Two missed calls from Mazda, no voice mail. I excitedly called them back thinking my car would be finished, come to find out after 20 minutes of driving, "remaned" engine.....has 0 compression that's right all three readings have come back as 0. So I have no car (I'm not 25 they wont give me a loaner) I'm out $500 for new parts, and I have to go another 2 and a half weeks of "tomorrow" and who knows how much more in parts. Can anyone give me some retribution here is it ever going to look up? I'm super pissed.

Just got my engine replaced about 500 miles ago, it was an 04 with 95,500 miles on it.

Dealer took about a week to do it but they replaced the oil injectors for free not sure if thats common or not.

Anyway the car feels like it has more power after about 5k but I dont notice much difference before that.

Reading on all rotor faces were anywhere from 6.3 to 6.9 before the new reman.
