I consider you guys in the US very lucky to have an 8 year warranty, every other country does not..You also purchase new Mazda's cheaper than any other nation.

But do I hate Mazda because I don't get an 8 year warranty..no.

But what I dislike are those who think they get a raw deal..

There are not too many car manufacturers who would give you a new engine and a loan car when a car is over 6-8 years old...in fact I cant think of any other make who would do this.

Perhaps Mitsubishi..

Yes, there is inconvenience for you...and I guess you are dealing with it.

I would be more than happy if I had the same protection.

Good luck..
^This. I don't even know how I'm gonna get a replacement engine when mine dies, as far as I know my country's only local dealer doesn't know rotary and never heard of them replacing one.

The only reason I decide to get a used Eight was due to Mazda backing their product with a 100k warranty. That reminds me, I need to go get my compression checked.

Agree with others that Mazda's decision to extend the warranty on the Renesis rotary engine (to prevent a sales volume and PR nightmare that would have wrecked any chance of recovering their R&D and production investments) is a windfall that we should all be thankful for.

Only way this scenario has a bad spin to it you can do anything about I believe is if you were not informed and did not agree to the repair delays that have been incurred. If you want to investigate further, check PA Code - Section 301.5 - subsection 6.

Unhappy

It was January 2005. I saw her: winning blue MT GT 2004, new. She had 400 miles on it (tester?). I drove 18k miles the first year. Then about 25oo miles every year since. She has 29000 miles on her and 3 weeks ago she started taking longer to start. 1st gear was jumpy at low rpms. 2nd was even more underpowered. 3rd at low rpms was weakened. 4th was okay.
took her to the dealer and she failed her compression test.
i get a new engine. 29k miles on the first one.
i should be happy because it's free. but i'm sad.
i bought her thinking one day i will pass her on to my child.
will she last that long? i love her. but i need reliability.
should i trade her in for that convertible camaro?
what does the future hold for me?
will this one last me another 29k? 100k? a k?

Does a new engine get a new 8 yr, 100k warranty?
Thanks RX8club for being there for me. And sharing in my pain.

I totally agree with this statement. The only reason I decided to pull the trigger on a used 8 was because of the extended warranty. Had Mazda not made this warranty possible I would have never even considered buying the car. The 8 is a wonderful piece of machinery, and a thrill to drive, but something like a failed engine at 60K miles is a major inconvenience, even if covered by a factory warranty.

The reason I was making my complaint was because rental cars seem to be given to some people and not others. It should be an all or nothing deal, either everyone should get one or no one should. I was disappointed that the Mazda Dealer I took mine to (North Penn Mazda) would not give me a rental car no matter how hard I fought.

Joined the club on the last day of my extended warranty (June 10th). So, to all early '04 owners, BRING YOUR CAR IN FOR A COMPRESSION TEST BEFORE YOUR WARRANTY IS UP. I'm the third owner of the car. I got it w/ 36k, and brought it in for the decarb and compression test at 53k, and it failed. I was actually very fortunate. I haven't been to these forums for several months due to being too busy with other stuff. My upper radiator hose clamp broke loose, so I added a second and brought it in to Berge Mazda to get a new hose and clamp. I asked about the price of a decarb and compression test, and the service manager, Vince Medina, mentioned that I had only 1 month left on my warranty. For some reason I had been under the impression that the warranty was 10 years instead of 8. So it tested low and I got approved for a new reman which I had in less than 2 weeks later ... incidentally picked it up on the last day of warranty.

Vince did a fantastic job at answering my exhaustive barrage of questions about TSBs, mount options, OMP lines, etc. etc. and was very fair and prompt in service. The swap was done by Berge's rotary tech Mike. He seems to really know what he's doing with rotaries and I felt that his recommendations and work were solid.

I'm joining the club. After marbles in a can (MIAC) and paying to replace an intake manifold and some radiator hoses, Mazda is replacing my engine (just the core). While it still cost me around $1000, I'm hoping this makes my 8 fun to drive again.

What I don't like, is the service dept. telling me the new engine has no extra warranty. They said that the new engine is only covered under the original warranty to 100k miles. Since I finally got it fixed around 85k miles, that means I'll just have 15k miles to really test it out. This seems really shady. How can Mazda not provide the same warranty on a replacement engine? If it goes out after 60-80k miles, I'll be way past the original 100k limit and be screwed.

That's not how warranties work. If you replace something under OEM warranty it's until the warranty runs out. Else they could be replacing engines in perpetuity. Do you think Mazda would sign up to be in the business of replacing an engine possibly 50 years from now if a guy keeps coming back every 7 years for a new engine "under warranty?"

This is the only engine I am aware of where you could get it replaced at 99K miles with a new one if it fails.

Agree with shaunv74, warranties are not forever..

It is the same in Australia or ANYWHERE...

If you have a OEM New part replaced under new vehicle warranty (any part) where is does not cost you any money, that part is warranted UNTIL your cars normal new car warranty expires...so you could have 3 days and or 5000 miles to go.... so once that is up it is UP!...

Now having said that, IF you have ANY part replaced with an OEM Mazda new (genuine) part and you pay for said part and or labour, then that new Part(s) does have a Mazda New Parts Warranty of 12 Months or 12,000 miles (20,000 KMS).

How many miles should I put on my new engine before I auto-x (there is one tomorrow.. and I really want to go now that I have the engine mounts fixed)?

I only have about 350 now...... (I live a mile from work, so most of those miles were longer trips).

No reason you can't AutoCross...

Just don't let the revs climb very high, and "avoid prolonged full throttle" or whatever the manual says, lol.

I just followed what the manual says about "new" engines, which I think said to basically "baby it" for the first 600 miles. I also changed the oil right after that (today actually), just to be safe.

I broke mine in over 1000 miles. Some say there is no need other say 500 or 600 miles. One thing for sure is that it does not hurt the motor to take a little extra time breaking it in.

Apparently, my clutch plate is also failing. I'm curious how many other people's clutches have needed to be replaced at the same time as the engine. For those that did get the clutch replaced, did you go with the OEM or get something aftermarket? I'm leaning towards aftermarket since Mazda wants ~$900.

Mine was to the rivets.

Mazda replaced it labour free, but they wanted 875$ for the clutch too.

I found an Exedy Stage one clutch kit for 400$ overnighted from Toronto at no charge... I was lucky.

I would definatly look into an Exedy clutch kit or an ACT one if I where you.

I too was recommended a clutch with my engine replacement. Got a clutch, flywheel, and clutch assembly for 775$. Engine was 3500 (but covered by warranty)

I just got my car back yesterday. I really can not believe the difference. I think I have never had a proper eight in the year I have owned it. It probably had low compression when I bought it, it has never felt this smooth. I cant wait to truly test it out after my self imposed 500 mile break in.

Here's my post from the NE Forum last week:
I was pulling out of Lourdes Hospital parking lot in Camden after visiting my wife Saturday a week ago when my 8 just sputtered & died. I drifted over to the curb, wouldnt restart, but not a flood situation. I called AAA & then quickly called my daughter & her fiance to come join me as I didnt want to be sitting, broken-down, in a nice (dead) sports car in Camden too long. I had it towed to my house assuming the dealer was locked up late on Saturday night. With the situation with my wife, I didnt get it towed to Maple Shade Mazda in Turnersville until last Friday.
Finally today, I heard from them & I need a new motor. I almost made it seven years without a big problem, only a week shy. Im hoping it will run like new?! when I get it back in what... 3, 4 weeks?
So I wont be out on the road for awhile, but no one ever sees me anyway. I miss it already when I see other nice cars & Im in my wife's Santa Fe. I have to settle with getting pimped at the traffic lights for awhile, too.
I'll let you know how the new engine is...whenever that may be.

Since then, I still havent heard from them, but I'll give a call in a day or two. They did offer me a loaner, but since my wife is still laid up, Im just using her SUV.

Got my 8 back today. Died on June 11th. They got it on June 17th. I got it back July 29th.
Cost $212 for "diagnostics."

Glad to see your going again. The $212 "diagnostics" concern me me. Here is a copy of the "TSB" about engine replacement and it states on page 14..".Additional diagnostic time cannot be claimed for this repair".

Thanks, OR. I printed it out. I'll see if I get anywhere. The service guy can be a bit of a BS-er.

If the diagnostics determine that you need work under warranty, then you should not pay for the diagnostics.
