My new engine @60k
59,150 miles on original engine - replaced/bad
Factory warranty core installed on 2005 MT
Only twice in 7 years has it gone over 4.000 miles between oil change
Have only used 5/20 non-synthetic
Not impressed

This must be a record. I've just replaced the engine in my 8 after eight years of hard driving, which includes a turbo conversion around 5 or 6 years ago. However, I must add that before the boosted motor was installed I replaced the apex and corner seals with 3mm Hurleys and doweled the plates and housings.
Turns out the replacement wasn't even necessary as the compression checked out fine and the problem I suspected being a pending failure turned out to be a broken APV valve, so I could have stuck the old engine back in. I'm going to refresh the original engine and crate it for future use.
Oh, and before I forget. I stopped using Royal Purple a long time ago mainly due to the difficulty in getting the stuff in South Africa. Been using Castrol Magnatec a few years now with no adverse effects.

Seems this is my day for records. The engine I popped in lasted around 20 minutes when I noticed a water leak from the exhaust! Pulled the plugs and saw the 1st rotor chamber was wet. Replaced the plugs and cranked the motor without the rad cap on. Looked like the fountains at the Vegas casinos! Popped a water seal. Damn! Guess one shouldn't crate an engine for a couple of years. Replacement engine failing in 20 minutes is another record. So now I must hold the record for the longest lasting blown 8 and also the shortest!
Oh well, it;s out again and I'm stripping.....
WTF!

I am now officially part of the new engine club. After 3 weeks of waiting, i get my car back dirtier than I have ever seen before. Rims were full of grease, car sat outside in the rain and sun. The interior smelt like grease, gas and body odor. Impossible to get the smell out.
2. My car was bumped in the front, paint cracked and so did the front grill. The side skirts were scratched due to a retard technician trying to put the lift underneath. Duhhhh its too low... I called them as soon as I noticed while washing the car. Apparently when a tech damages a car, he writes a report. In my case, there was no report so Im on my own.
3. All the costs were covered, diagnostics, compression test. However, they did manage to sell me a battery for 90$ and a rear o2 sensor for 160$ it probably went bad due to my midpipe. With 1 hour labour. (I couldve done it in 20 minutes.) Total cost = 342$ I had to give them something.
4. They did try to sell me 2 front rotors and pads for 222$ each rotor and 130 for pads but they would cut the labor in half. I said no thanks and ordered them on ebay for 300$ for the whole set with hawk ceramic pads.
Cars feels great, I ordered new plugs coils and wires from ebay. Gonna clean my air filter and MAF sensor and reset fuel trims. It still feels like it vibrates a lot on idle when its hot outside. I see my mirror shaking as well as the shifter. Is that normal?
P.S. Since i got my car i have never felt this SO MUCH POWER on it. I bought it at 50k miles. I dont remember it ever having low end torque or being able to accelerate on 6th gear at 60mph. It doesnt hesitate on low rpm acceleration. Cant wait to be done with the "break in" period which is so confusing on which on to choose!
Cheers to all rx8 owners!

I never quite made it to my goal of 175,000 miles. I had to have the car towed and dropped off at Lucky 7 Racing in Duarte, CA for an engine replacement this past weekend.
This is the only time it's ever been towed during my ownership of this car, the last time it was driven was the day after it's third anniversary(July 28th). It had an oil leak while I was driving home on the freeway, heard the metal shavings sound and it was pretty obvious at that moment it was the end and ran it's last mile; exited and as I slowed the engine would die, so I shifted it in third while coasting to start it up. I kept the engine rev'ed at 1,000 rpm on stop lights and drove the last two miles home in the street. It officially clocked out at 167,305 miles in Original Factory Engine. The shop will take picture during the whole exchange, I don't think I'll see inside how the engine would look.

2004 mt, bought the car at 64,343, engine replaced at about 64,100 (about two weeks ago) as a result of misfiring. Car was shaking a lot, so i brought it back and they tell me that the motor mounts are shot. hopefully that will make the shakes go away. Anyone have a misfiring engine where they didn't replace the cat (they said it was good, and while my gas mileage jumped from 11 to 14-15, i think that might still be the culprit)

Then you know some very unlucky people, considering most 8's have one engine – the one under the hood when it left the factory. (And there's actually a name for your information; it's called "anecdotal". If you know someone with a dictionary, look it up.)

I would like to join please.
I bought my 04 A couple months ago. Had 32,500 miles on it. about a week after I bought it and 200 miles later I decided to call my local mazda dealer and get a history report on all the recalls and stuff just to see what had been done. First the guy was suprised at the low milage then he said I see it has a new motor. It was done at 32,200. All recals and flashes were up to date. AWSOME.
So can I join please please please.
Just thought I would share my story and brag a little.

A reminder: the internet is a great source for sensationalistic "reality" that is often utterly false. You'll notice there's no "One Engine Club," despite the fact that its membership dwarfs that of the "New Engine Club" that fills these pages.
Then again, never underestimate the dumbing down of our culture. And what passes today for "news".

Just joined the new motor club. Just picked it up from the dealer this morning. I've only driven 15 miles on the new motor, and so far I'm not really all that impressed. It doesn't feel any more powerful than my motor that was loosing compression. I'll report back after the break in period.
2004 original engine until just over 58k miles.
New engine today.... results pending.

Engine # 4
Just put in engine #4 (had the compression checked the day before the 8 year warranty expiration, and it failed)
Original engine replaced after 36,000 (low compression)
First replacement lasted 500 miles (imbalance)
Second replacement lasted 20,000 (low compression)
We'll see how #4 goes. Oil change with non-synthetic 5w-20 every ~6 mo / ~4,000 miles

I bought my RX8 used with 66k miles on it. Took it in to mazda for a tune up and they told me "Im surprised the previous owner never replaced the coils, plugs, and wires when they replaced the engine at 54k miles" .... I was like "new engine?, whaaa?? did I win the lotto? Pretty cool buying a car with 66k miles then you are told it really has 15k or whatever. Not too shabby. If they replaced the engine like a year ago though, doesn't that mean it is one of the "newer" ones, and therefore better? Who knows right. You still gotta hand it to mazda for not being stingy with replacements.
